An Expanded Roster of Fighters
The highly acclaimed fighting series adds 12 new legends to the robust Marvel vs. Capcom 3 lineup, bringing the total overall roster of characters up to 50. This includes zombie-slayer Frank West on the Capcom side and cosmic defender Rocket Raccoon from the Marvel Universe. The new character options also include Phoenix Wright, Vergil, Nemesis, Strider and Firebrand from Capcom and Nova, Iron Fist, Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider and Hawkeye from Marvel.
New Features and Modes
In addition to new characters, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 features a host of enhancements and features to improve the game's balance and online functionality. One of the biggest additions to the game is the fan-requested Spectator Mode, which allows fighters to watch live online matches together. Also, available as free downloadable content after launch is the 'Heroes and Heralds' Mode, a new single player and multiplayer team-based mode in which player unlock brand-new abilities with upgrade cards, customize favorite characters with new powers and compete in groups as either heroes defending Earth from Galactus or as one of Galactus' Heralds.
PS Vita Specific Features
The power of the PS Vita allows its version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 to play and look virtually identical to the console releases, but it also provides players with control functionality unique to the Sony handheld. Utilizing the PS Vita's front and rear touch screen and pad, players can unleash simple combos by 'mashing' the screen with taps. The basic level of these 'touch' combos ensures that players who choose to use standard combo input patterns using the Vita's d-pad and face buttons are not at a disadvantage, as more advanced combos are always available if the right button pattern is entered correctly. The touch pad can also be used to unleash hyper combos by tapping a character's full hyper combo meter, and to tag in a new character from a player's team by simply touching the image of that character.

The graphics are on par with the HD console versions of the game. The game's 48 default characters appear large and detailed, and animate fluidly. If there's any slowdown it's so minor as to be virtually unnoticable, and the majority of the time the game appears to run at an impressive 60 frames per second. The backgrounds feature fewer animated elements, and certain levels that scrolled in the console versions don't appear to here. Loading times seem to be roughly on par with the PS3 version.
I had concerns going in that the Vita's smaller face-buttons buttons might hamper the gameplay a bit, but I surprisingly found myself having an easier time of it than I did even the PS3 version. The D-Pad is solid, and pulling off complicated combos, special moves, and supers works like a charm. In fact I find myself enjoying the game even more than I did on the PS3. The Touch mode is...well, it's there. In it you can tap the screen to perform combos and activate your supers and X-Factor, which while neat to mess around with for a bit quickly leaves the game feeling like an effortless cake-walk to complete. I think it's something that most folks might be inclined to mess around with once or twice, but I don't see it having legs.
The game features all the same gameplay modes as its console cousins do, including Heroes and Heralds (which is day-one DLC). The online stuff is set up exactly like it was on the console versions, and thankfully you have the option of filtering out touch-screen players when you set up matches. You can also opt to allow folks to interrupt your game for matches if you'd like, and again you can choose not to allow touch-screen players to challenge you if you're so inclined. You do have to be connected to Wi-Fi to play online though, as attempting to access the online components on 3G will only allow you to check the leaderboards. In my experiences with it thus-far, online gameplay performed pretty well and was relatively lag-free, but while it was a ton of fun, I'm such a scrub that I'm probably going to spend the bulk of my time with the game offline until I get a bit better at it.
If you have the PS3 version you can take advantage of the Ultimate Controller mode, which allows you to use your Vita to control the PS3 game and allows you to map your choice of special moves and/or supers to the touch-screen. That mode really doesn't add much value to the package, and again, you do need the PS3 version to take advantage of it, but if you meet that requirement then it's a nifty extra to tool around with once or twice. Another very cool bonus is that any DLC that you purchased for the PS3 version of the game will be available for you to use on the Vita at no extra charge. So if you've bought any costumes or the two DLC exclusive characters for the PS3 game, then they're yours to use on the Vita as well.
The TL;DR version of this review is basically that you're getting the console game in the palm of your hand with a couple of new modes that take advantage of the Vita, and with the only real compromise being that a few of the backgrounds are static or feature fewer animated elements than in the console version. It's a ton of fun, the online play works well, any DLC purchased for the PS3 version carries over, and it controls like a dream. If you want a great version of the game on the go, it's well worth checking out.
My one semi-complaint is this (POSSIBLE SPOILER):
I don't consider myself to be the best fighting game player in the world, but I have some skill. I can NOT defeat Galactus! I don't even know how I should approach him! He's 100ft tall! Two flicks from him and I'm toast! I came close to beating him once, so I know it's possible, but the casual gamer is going to get very frustrated. I even tried on very easy difficulty, in which I breezed through the other fights without even getting my first character KOed, and I still got my butt handed to me buy Galactus. I shall keep at it and I shall prevail! The main boss being very difficult is more of a plus than a minus in a fighting game anyway, and it certainly doesn't effect my overall rating of the game.

This is not to say UMvC3 isn't a bad game. The graphics are quite good, even fun. Also love some of the super moves. My biggest complaint(s)- where is Cyclops or Cable or Apocalypse. Why are they always sticking Wolverine in these games? I honestly do not know who half of the people that occupy the roster is- especially for the Capcom side. And this is coming from someone is well-versed and very familiar with both Marvel and Capcom games (both old, new and obscure), comics and TV adaptations. There are maybe three unknowns on the Capcom side I guess was a good choice to introduce (Vergil, Dante and Trish, and Zero [a Megaman replacement]), but everyone else who is new, I don't know who the hell they are, or why Capcom put them in there. And then on the Marvel side, they put a bunch of new people who you barely hear about, and I guess in the process, taking up space where other familiar/popular characters would have been.
Again, the quality of the game isn't in question- or else I would have easily given it 5 stars. Its the roster that's the biggest disappointment. And especially for someone who follows the material (background story/characters/shows/past games) so closely, its a real let down- and definitely not worth the high price I paid for this game. Injustice: Gods Among Us was a far cheaper game to purchase, much more recent- and much more fulfilling than this game.
