No opportunity to use the restaurant other than breakfast, but the meals looked superb.
No parking that we could see but adjacent to a public under-ground car-park.
Ulm itself was a delight, well worth an overnight stay.
The hotel itself is done it what we would call "altdeutscher Stil"... Old.... Old, even ancient cupboards, and other furniture. The rooms themselves are small but functional. The furniture inside the rooms was, I hesitate to call it new, but newish. Perfectly ok to stay in for a night or two. Small bathrooms but with everything in it. Breakfast was OK, not opulent but enough. Staff was very nice and friendly. The mattress unfortunately was old and not comfortable at all, could do with a new one. Couldn't get the WiFi to work on my laptop, but it worked on my phone....
All in all, I liked the hotel for its charm and location. Would definitely stay again.
And also the churchbells that rang every 15 minutes all night through !!
However, nice staff in the reception
And the breakfast was OK
and the prices was on the other side not that high
Also the locaction was good
We knew right away that the Hotel Ulmer Spatz was not quite as good quality as the Hotel am Rathaus, where we had been told we would be staying. But, it was closer to the historic cathedral - so we thought, eh, let's go with the flow and not press the Hotel am Rathaus too much.
That was a mistake. The Hotel Ulmer Spatz is a tired hotel. It's clean, but very worn, with lots of quirks - a microscopic elevator (really big enough for only one person and one suitcase), ridiculously tight/tiny lobby, old furniture. The worst thing of all, though, was that the rooms were stiflingly hot. This was in mid-June, and it was about 65 degrees F outside during the daytime, but our second-floor bedroom must have been 80 degrees F - maybe because heat rises, so the higher rooms were hotter? There is no air conditioning, so all you can do is open the windows - which meant that bugs came in throughout the night. But, because the cathedral's bell tolls EVERY 15 MINUTES throughout the night, we were awake to greet all the bugs. It was a miserable, hot, sleepless night - and, since we were starting a bike trip the following morning, we really needed a good night's sleep.
For what it's worth, we didn't see any construction work at the Hotel am Rathaus - there were plenty of guests coming in and out, and it looked to be of higher quality than the Hotel Ulmer Spatz, in a slightly better location and adjacent to several good restaurants. We don't really believe they relocated us because of construction work - but that's a problem with the Hotel am Rathaus, not the Hotel Ulmer Spatz, where we ultimately stayed.
"If worried about noise from outside, closing the windows keeps the noise well outside"Read full review
"The lower floors might be SLIGHTLY cooler than the higher floors in summer. But, given the hotel's proximity to the cathedral and its bell tower, all the rooms are noisy."Read full review
"I don't know but try for one overlooking the cathedral at least you'd have a nicer view."Read full review
