Be aware that purchasing a historic home is different than purchasing a more modern residence. It goes without saying that a historic home in Minnesota is old, but this means that unless it has been substantially renovated, most of the home's parts are old as well. For instance, structural problems are common in historic homes. Wiring is typically not up to present-day code and may be faulty, as well. Should you decide to purchase a vintage home with problems, you should be aware that rehabbing these homes may be subject to stringent guidelines, especially if the home is designated historic or located in a historic district.

The key to purchasing a historic home is the home inspection. The difference between this home inspection and the conventional inspection is the inspector –- find one with experience inspecting historic homes. You may also want to have the home inspected by a  structural engineer. Don’t be surprised if the inspection report is lengthy and lists many problems. Try not to be too discouraged, though, before obtaining price quotes from contractors for the repair or rehab work required. It may not be as costly as you think.
