Hawk in the Redwood Forest at UCLA Lab School...Thanks to Margie Limon for the photo!
Extended Day Program teacher Maria Avalos grew up with social justice in her family roots. Her stepfather, Larry Itliong, was an activist who organized California farm workers to demand higher wages, better working conditions, and the right to form a union. By standing up for the rights of workers, he ignited the Delano grape strike in 1965 and became one of the fathers of the West Coast labor movement, working with Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, and the National Farmworkers Association.
Mr. Itliong was among six notable individuals posthumously inducted into the 14th California Hall of Fame on October 12 by Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
“Sometimes the Hall of Fame gives us the opportunity to bring outstanding Californians out of the shadows when their contributions to society have been largely overlooked in history books,” Jennifer Siebel Newsom said in the induction ceremony. “And there is no better example of that than Larry Itliong.”
Last year, Governor Newsom declared October 25 Larry Itliong Day in California.
Congratulations and best wishes to Ms. Avalos and her family!

Returning to campus in March after a long time away (and with more time outdoors due to Covid mitigation measures), our Room 1 Intermediate students were inspired to consider their surroundings with fresh eyes. Their wonderings led to the Hillside Trails project. It's an area across from the Redwood Forest where they spent many hours clearing invasive ivy and designing spaces for the whole school to enjoy. There are areas for sketching, bird watching, or reading; a small sculpture garden with student made artworks; and a trail map to lead the way. Read about the project and see photos in Ampersand.
