Brussels is great as a greenish city with lots of places where greenery is well kept and you can have a quiet walk...!

How peaceful and spiritual to find an oasis of orthodox beauty in the centre of Bruxelles. The orthodox churches are few and often rented from local Catholic establishments. Therefore celebrating Christmas or Easter in a truly Orthodox church is rare and magic. The cupolas, the Byzantine icons, the soothing chants and the richness of the priests religious clothing. All take your mind and faith away on a trip of Eastern spirituality. Very beautiful!

We had a look at Villa Bloemenwerf during a self-guided architecture walk in the Brussels’ suburb of Uccle ending at Dieweg Cemetery. The villa was not mentioned in the Neighbourhood Walks (Uccle) brochure we picked up at the Visit.brussels tourist office at Rue Royale but Avenue Vanderaey was on the map. So, we decided on a quick detour because we were curious to see the first architectural project of Henri Van de Velde, who started out as a painter. As Villa Bloemenwerf is built on a small hill and it was winter, we were just able to spot its English cottage style three-gabled façade among the leafless trees of the surrounding garden. The ground floor windows were boarded up and the house seemed to be empty. We read somewhere the villa was put up for sale by the heirs of Van de Velde for 2.45 million euros in 2013 and was on the market for years but we have no idea what happened to it later. Apart from an heritage information panel there were no indications as to whether the villa would be open to visitors anytime soon. So, we will have to make do with available pictures.

We like this large Oxfam Bookshop, which also has a corner with fair trade products like coffee, fruit juice, wine, and our favourite sesame crackers made in Italy. They also have some DVDs and CDs. The bookshop is extremely well-kept. It is clean and tidy, and the books are well-presented. They are arranged in alphabetic order by language (French, English, and some children’s literature in Dutch). The atmosphere is lovely, and the volunteer staff are helpful and knowledgeable. A must-visit shop for those who are wary of staring at a screen all day long.

The place to be if you are a beer lover. Great choice of artisanal beers from all over the world directly from the tap.

Nice, well-kept laser game facility. Staff was super-friendly while explaining the different games and following up on drink orders. Much fun with the colleagues.
