What Does Tyler Mean?

The name Tyler is of Old French origin from the world tieulier meaning tiler or tile maker. In Middle English the spelling became tyler. The name was used for a person who lays tiles or bricks, and often as an occupational name for a housebuilder. 

Tyler is also the name given to the office of the outer guard of a Masonic Lodge. All lodges appoint a Tyler to stand guard outside the door. This junior officer is in charge of guarding against ineligible masons from coming in, preparing the room for meetings, supplying regalia and equipment, and sometimes acting as the caretaker of the premises.

The name Tyler is used both as a surname and a given name for both sexes although it’s predominantly used for boys. It follows the trend of parents choosing names for their babies based on surnames.

How Popular is the Name Tyler?

Tyler entered the Social Security Administration’s list as No. 834 in 1900. It promptly fell off the list the next year and returned about a decade later only to fall off again. The name Tyler would not make its way back onto the top 1,000 list again until 1945 when it barely hung on as No. 991.

From that point on though, Tyler made a steady climb up the list, moving about 100 spots or more every decade. It finally peaked as No. 5 in 1993 and 1994. It stayed in the top 100 for the next decade or so. The name Tyler has since decreased in popularity and as of 2020, is ranked as No. 130.

The popularity of the name Tyler in the 1990s and early 2000s might be attributed to several factors. Steven Tyler, lead singer of the rock band Aerosmith, was a household name at the time. The cult-favorite movie "Fight Club" came out in 1999 and featured a character named Tyler. A successful comedy series called “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” also ran on television for eight seasons starting in 2006.
