Tuft & Needle describes the Original as firm. Though the company does not provide a numerical firmness rating, professional reviewers score it at about a 6 to 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The feel of the Original could make it a good fit for lightweight to average-weight back sleepers and stomach sleepers.
This Tuft & Needle mattress is 9 1/2 inches tall with a 3-inch layer made of graphite-infused Adaptive Foam designed to draw heat away from the body. The remaining 6 1/2 inches of foam in the base layer provide foundational support. The company’s proprietary polyfoam is an open-cell design that promotes airflow.
USN&WR
The Tuft & Needle Original is a budget-friendly, all-foam mattress.
If you sleep with someone who moves around a lot at night, you’ll want a mattress that can reduce motion transfer. The Original is made entirely of foam, which tends to absorb movement well. However, the foam used in the Tuft & Needle Original is more responsive than traditional slow-moving memory foam. As a result, you may still be able to feel your sleep partner’s movements.
USN&WR
Our tester found T&N Adaptive Foam to transfer more motion than traditional foam.
Like most foam mattresses, edge support is also not one of the Original’s strongest suits, with some professional reviewers noting that the edges of the bed tend to sag beneath body weight. Unlike Tuft & Needle’s other two mattresses – the Mint and the Mint Hybrid – the Original does not feature reinforced edges. Edge support is important to people with pain and mobility issues who need more resistance from the bed when getting in and out of it.
USN&WR
Our tester found the edge of the mattress to give a “sucked in” feeling.
The top layer of the Essential T&N Original is infused with graphite and cooling gel to wick away heat released by the body during sleep. The foam used in this bed is an open-cell construction that’s designed for air circulation and cooling. While professional reviewers say it provides decent cooling, it’s made entirely of foam, which tends to trap heat.
Pressure relief is a particular concern for side sleepers, who tend to exert more pressure on their hips and shoulders. The base model from Tuft & Needle is not as soft or cushioning as traditional memory foam mattresses, so people who like to sleep on their sides may want to consider other options. When it comes to these sleepers, Tuft & Needle recommends the higher-priced Mint model, which it says is more plush.

Our average-weight tester found his hips decently supported by the Essential T&N Original Mattress.

A queen-size Essential T&N Original Mattress costs $995 . However, you can often save money on a new mattress from Tuft & Needle by shopping when the company is running a sale. Sales are run near holidays, such as Presidents Day, Labor Day, or Black Friday, but also occur at other points throughout the year. Each sale will vary in terms of savings with some offering a better deal if you bundle your Essential T&N Original Mattress with select bedding products.
This Tuft & Needle mattress has two foam layers covered by a breathable, soft fabric. In total, the mattress is 9 1/2 inches tall. Its first layer features T&N Adaptive Foam, a proprietary material containing graphite and cooling gel, which are intended to help dissipate heat. The base layer features 6 1/2 inches of foam to provide stability.
USN&WR
The Essential T&N Original Mattress is made with two layers of polyfoam.
The materials used to make a mattress have a significant impact on how it feels. While some mattresses offer more of a plush and cradling feel, others will have a firmer and more supportive feel. Each individual’s perception of the way a mattress feels can also vary based on several factors, particularly their weight. Heavyweight sleepers (those weighing more than 230 pounds) will place more pressure on a mattress than a sleeper with a lower body weight. To learn more about what you can expect based on your body type, read through the next few sections.
Lightweight Sleepers (less than 130 pounds)
Generally speaking, the Essential T&N Original Mattress may be a good choice for many lightweight sleepers, particularly those who prefer to sleep on their backs or stomachs. Those weighing less than 130 pounds should find that the mattress offers the right amount of support to keep their spine aligned and alleviate pressure when sleeping in one of these two positions. However, lighter-weight side sleepers may not be as comfortable on this mattress. Its firmer feel may prevent them from sinking into the mattress enough to keep their hips and shoulders comfortable while sleeping.
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 pounds)
Individuals weighing between 130 and 230 pounds are considered to be “average weight” when it comes to mattress recommendations. If you fall within this weight range, your preferred sleeping position can help you determine whether this mattress is right for you. Our product tester found the mattress to be most comfortable when lying on his side. He noted that it offered sufficient support for his hips and that his shoulders felt cushioned and comfortable when lying on his side. When a side sleeper’s hips and shoulders sink into a mattress enough, it helps ensure that their spine is aligned.
The Essential T&N Original Mattress may also be a suitable choice for many back sleepers, particularly those who weigh less than 200 pounds. Our average-weight tester, who weighs slightly more than 200 pounds, did note that his tailbone seemed to sink too low into the mattress while lying on his back. At the same time, his shoulders didn’t sink in equally as much to allow him to feel comfortable.
Average-weight stomach sleepers aren’t likely to find the Essential T&N Original Mattress to be the right fit. Our tester noted that his hips sunk farther than the rest of him. After just a few minutes of testing out the mattress on his stomach, he was already starting to feel some strain on his spine from it being out of alignment.
Heavyweight Sleepers (more than 230 pounds)
Most heavyweight sleepers are unlikely to find that the Essential T&N Original Mattress is the ideal fit for their comfort needs. The foam mattress isn’t going to offer enough support for these individuals when sleeping on their backs or stomachs. They’re more likely to find that the mattress sags too much toward the middle, which will leave their spines out of alignment when sleeping. Heavyweight side sleepers will sink too deeply into the mattress, leading to increased pressure on their shoulders and hips.

The Tuft & Needle Mint
The Essential T&N Original and the Tuft & Needle Mint are both all-foam models designed with contouring T&N Adaptive Foam. The foam’s open-cell design and infused graphite and cooling gel help it to wick moisture away, keeping individuals cooler as they sleep. The key design difference between the two models is the 2-inch Mint layer on the Mint mattress. Located just below the 3-inch layer of Adaptive Foam, this layer offers additional cooling properties along with pressure relief. This also gives the mattresses a different feel, with the Essential being categorized as “firm” and the Mint being labeled as “medium.”
Both mattresses may be a suitable option for average-weight back and side sleepers and lightweight back sleepers. The Essential will work well for most lightweight stomach sleepers, while the Mint is a more suitable option for lightweight side sleepers. Another key difference between these two models is the price. With its retail price of $1,595 for a queen-size mattress, the Tuft & Needle Mint is more than $400 pricier than the Essential T&N Original Mattress.
usn&wr
The Nectar Memory Foam and the Essential T&N Original are both comparably priced all-foam mattresses. The Nectar’s retail price of $1,099 for a queen-size is around only $100 more expensive than the Tuft and Needle’s $995 retail price. As a mattress-in-a-box, both models will also need to be opened up and allowed to expand by shoppers. However, while they both feature all-foam construction, the type of foam varies between the two.
The Nectar’s memory foam construction may make it a more suitable option for average-weight stomach and combination sleepers, whereas the Adaptive Foam material of the Essential T&N Original is best for average-weight side and back sleepers. One other key difference between the two models relates to the warranty and sleep trial that is offered by the manufacturer. The Nectar mattress comes with a 365-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty, while the Essential T&N Original Mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty.

Tuft & Needle lists the Mint mattress as having a medium feel, but does not give it a numerical firmness rating. Other professional reviewers categorize the Mint as having a firmness rating between 5 1/2 and 6 1/2. Of course, all ratings are subjective, and the mattress may feel more or less firm to you depending on your body type and sleep preferences.
The Mint mattress features three different foam layers that give it a total height of 11 1/2 inches. The 3-inch top layer, made of T&N Adaptive Foam, has an open-cell design with infused cooling gel and graphite to keep users from getting too hot when they sleep. A 2-inch Mint layer is next. Made from Adaptive Foam combined with ceramic and cooling gel, this layer is designed to offer additional cooling properties while also helping alleviate pressure points. Finally, a 6 1/2-inch base layer offers support for the mattress and works to minimize sinkage of the upper two layers.
USN&WR
The Tuft & Needle Mint is 11 1/2 inches tall.
Generally speaking, all-foam mattresses are better at minimizing motion transfer than hybrid and innerspring models. The Mint mattress maintains this trend and performs well at isolating motion, which can make it a good option for couples who want to sleep together without getting disturbed when the other is tossing and turning or getting into and out of bed.
In our 360 Lab, our tester noted that the bed was slightly bouncy when his partner was moving around but that it performed well overall in this area. Other professional reviewers agree and note that the Mint mattress’s foam layers absorb motion well and prevent it from transferring across the bed.
USN&WR
The Mint mattress offers reinforced construction along the edges when compared to the Essential T&N Original Mattress. However, in our lab, our tester found the mattress to be lacking sufficient edge support. When sitting on the edge of the bed, he found that he’d sunk too deep and didn’t feel supported.
USN&WR
We found the Tuft & Needle Mint to lack sufficient edge support in our 360 Lab.
While all-foam mattresses are notorious for causing individuals to overheat when sleeping, Tuft & Needle took extra measures to prevent that from happening with its Mint mattress. The top Adaptive Foam layer utilizes an open-cell construction for enhanced breathability. Graphite and cooling gel are also infused into this layer to prevent individuals from overheating by wicking heat away from their bodies while they’re sleeping.
The special Mint layer – the difference between this model and the Essential T&N Original Mattress – offers an additional 2 inches of Adaptive Foam formulated with ceramic and cooling gel for an even better cooling performance. Our tester, who normally sleeps hot, said that the mattress’s cooling properties were very noticeable.
While pressure relief can vary based on body type, the Mint mattress performs well overall in this category. Our average-weight tester felt the most support on his hips and shoulders when sleeping on his side, but the cradling capabilities of the Mint’s Adaptive Foam can also offer pressure point relief for most lightweight and average-weight sleepers on their backs and sides (as well as lightweight sleepers on their stomachs). However, the mattress is likely too soft for most heavyweight sleepers, or those weighing more than 230 pounds, to receive adequate support or pressure point relief.

A queen-size Tuft & Needle Mint mattress costs $1,595, which is $600 more than the Essential T&N Original Mattress. This price is toward the middle of the range of the other mattresses that make our rating: Eight are less expensive and six are pricier. However, you may be able to get the Mint for less than the retail price if you shop during one of the company’s sales. Sales are regularly run around holidays, such as Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Cyber Monday, but Tuft & Needle also runs other specials at various points throughout the year.
The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is made from foam. The 3-inch top layer features an open-cell foam construction with infused cooling gel and graphite to help wick heat away from individuals as they sleep. Beneath this layer is the 2-inch Mint layer. Made from T&N Adaptive Foam with ceramic and cooling gel, this layer is designed to offer additional cooling properties while also relieving pressure points. The final layer of the mattress, which is 6 1/2 inches thick, is made from supportive foam that provides a sturdy foundation to ensure the upper layers don’t sink too deeply when an individual is sleeping. The top of the layer is covered with a removable and machine-washable knit fabric.

Tuft & Needle describes its Mint mattress as having a medium feel. However, as with other mattresses, the way the Tuft & Needle Mint will feel can vary between individuals. A person’s body type, sleep position, and other factors can all affect the perception of how a mattress feels. The next few sections go into more detail about how different body types are likely to perceive the feel of the mattress. Read on to decide if it sounds like a good fit for you.
Lightweight Sleepers (less than130 pounds)
Lightweight sleepers are likely to find the Tuft & Needle Mint to be comfortable and supportive. Back sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds should notice that the foam material allows them to sink in just enough to alleviate pressure points without pushing them too deep into the mattress to throw off spinal alignment or make their hips feel uncomfortable. Similarly, lightweight side sleepers should also find this mattress to be a good fit. When sleeping on the side, their shoulders and hips should receive ample support and pressure relief.
Overall, stomach sleepers should also find that this mattress works well for them. With their lighter weight, their hips are not going to sink too deeply into the foam, as will happen with heavier individuals. This should allow their spines to stay in alignment for a comfortable night’s sleep.
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 pounds)
The Tuft & Needle Mint may be a comfortable and supportive choice for some average-weight sleepers, but it will depend on their preferred sleep position. Many back sleepers are likely to find that their hips sink into the mattress but not too much that their lumbar region isn’t given enough support. However, the hips of some back sleepers closer to the top end of the weight range may sink a bit too far down for them to stay comfortable. Our tester, who weighs 201 pounds, found that he wasn’t very comfortable on his back due to his hips sinking into the mattress.
This mattress offers optimal sinkage and support to keep most average-weight side sleepers comfortable. Our tester shared that he was most comfortable lying on his side on this mattress because of the cushioning his shoulders and hips felt. With this cushioning from the Adaptive Foam combined with the transitional Mint layer, the spine of an average-weight side sleeper should remain in alignment.
Average-weight stomach sleepers may find that this mattress is too soft. Their hips are likely to sink too deeply into the bed, which will throw their spines out of alignment as they sleep. A few stomach sleepers toward the lower end of the weight range may find the mattress to be a suitable option for them, but most will probably want to choose a different option.
Heavyweight Sleepers (more than 230 pounds)
Overall, the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress isn’t going to be a good fit for most sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds. It’s too soft to offer the support sleepers in this group need. A heavier body is likely to sink through the comfort layer completely, which would mean that these individuals will be pressing up against the firmer foam layers that lie beneath the Adaptive Foam. This can increase pressure and cause the spine to be knocked out of alignment.
Zinus
The Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress
Both the Tuft & Needle Mint and the Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam mattresses are all-foam, bed-in-a-box mattresses with a three-layer construction. Price-wise, the Zinus is a more affordable choice. It retails for just $239 in a 6-inch version, which is significantly less than the Tuft & Needle Mint, which retails for $1,595. The Zinus is also available in four different height options (6-, 8-, 10-, and 12-inch), each with a high-density foam base, a layer of Zinus Comfort Foam, and a layer of green tea memory foam. The Tuft & Needle Mint is only available with an 11 1/2-inch height.
If you sleep hot, however, you might decide that the Mint is the best choice for you. In our 360 Lab, we found the Tuft & Needle Mint felt cooler than the Zinus, though neither felt particularly warm.

Leesa
The Leesa Original Mattress
Both the Mint and the Leesa Original offer an all-foam construction and come with a 10-year warranty and a 100-night sleep trial. However, while both mattresses are made completely out of foam, they are each made using different types of foam.
The Leesa Original is made from memory foam, while proprietary Adaptive Foam is used to make the Tuft & Needle Mint. Our testers felt that the construction of the Mint allowed it to perform better in regards to motion isolation than the Leesa Original. If you share a bed, the Mint may allow you to sleep with fewer disruptions caused by your partner tossing and turning or getting into or out of bed. However, for those looking to minimize how much they spend on a new mattress, the Lessa Original costs a few hundred dollars less than the Tuft & Needle Mint. It retails for $1,299, while the Mint’s retail price is $1,595.

These shops can be found in Scottsdale, Arizona; Gilbert, Arizona; Austin, Texas; Leawood, Kansas; Seattle, Washington; Beaverton, Oregon; Glendale, California; and Durham, North Carolina. You may also be able to find Tuft & Needle mattresses in a local furniture or mattress store. The company has a store finder on its website that can help you identify a nearby retailer. Several large retail companies, including Amazon, Wayfair, Walmart, and The Home Depot, also sell Tuft & Needle mattresses online.
Tuft & Needle Warranty: 10 years
A 10-year warranty is included with Tuft & Needle mattresses. The warranty covers damage caused by defective materials or workmanship, such as flaws in the foam material that result in cracking and visible sags that are deeper than 3/4 of an inch below the cover. Tuft & Needle’s warranty only applies to purchases made directly through authorized distribution channels or authorized retailers. It’s nontransferable and only applies to the original purchaser of the mattress. Moreover, the company will only honor the warranty if your mattress is in the United States due to the logistics of international shipping. The 10-year warranty offered by Tuft & Needle matches that of five of the other mattresses that make our rating. The other eight mattresses all come with a lifetime guarantee.
Tuft & Needle Trial Period: 100 nights
Tuft & Needle offers a 100-night trial period with its mattresses. The trial period starts the day that your new mattress is delivered. If you decide that you aren’t satisfied with your purchase, you can contact the company to process a return and receive a full refund. Tuft & Needle’s website has an online form that customers can fill out to initiate the return process. Once completed, a representative from the company will reach out via email to further discuss your return. In many cases, the company will recommend donating the mattress through an approved organization. Once you have donated – or in some cases shipped your mattress back – you can expect the money to be refunded to your original payment method within five to 10 business days.
The 100-night trial period offered by Tuft & Needle falls toward the lower end of the companies to make our rating. Just one company – Tempur-Pedic – has a shorter trial period (90 nights). Three other companies offer a comparable 100-night trial, four offer a 120-night trial, and three offer a 365-night trial.
Tuft & Needle is a mattress retailer that has been in business since 2012. The company strives to use safe and chemical-free products to make innovatively designed mattresses. Currently, the product lineup includes three mattresses. One of these is the Essential T&N Original Mattress, an all-foam bed designed for back and stomach sleepers. The next mattress option is the Tuft & Needle Mint, a cooling foam option for back and side sleepers. And, finally, the T&N Mint Hybrid Mattress incorporates individually wrapped springs and nanocoils for pressure relief for all sleep positions. Tuft & Needle mattresses come with a 100-night trial and a 10-year limited warranty.
It can take a Tuft & Needle mattress between 48 and 72 hours to fully expand. However, users do not need to wait a full two or three days before sleeping on their new mattress. While Tuft & Needle recommends waiting at least two hours to give the bed time to air out and expand some, the company shares that you can sleep on it immediately if needed. It can take between two and three weeks for the foam to finish expanding fully to offer the most supportive sleep surface. During this break-in period, give your body and the mattress time to adjust to each other. Tuft & Needle does recommend reaching out if you don’t find your mattress comfortable after the first few weeks.
When you first set up a new Tuft & Needle mattress, you might notice an odor. However, what you’re smelling isn’t chemicals but rather the scent of the new foam used to make the mattress. The foam is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it is made without the use of harmful chemicals, and the mattress is GreenGuard Gold certified. In our tests, we noticed a slight odor after unwrapping the Tuft & Needle Mint and practically no odor at all when we opened up the Essential T&N Original Mattress. If you detect any odor when setting up your new mattress, it should dissipate within a few days. Leaving the mattress uncovered to air out can help speed up the process.
No, Tuft & Needle mattresses don’t need a box spring. However, they do require a supportive base, which could mean using a box spring if you have a metal frame or a bed with slats that are more than 5 inches apart. Otherwise, you can use other support options, such as a platform bed, a slatted frame (as long as the slats are a maximum of 5 inches apart), a bunky board, or an adjustable bed frame.
