Track and Field Has Good Showing at Penn Relays and Vanderbilt Music City Challenge

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State men's and women's track and field teams competed in two different places this weekend, as a group of Flying Tigers and Tigerbelles went to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. At the same time, the rest of the bunch stayed in Nashville to compete in the Vanderbilt Outdoor Music City Challenge.
 
The Flying Tigers and Tigerbelles both had three relay teams travel to the Penn Relays along with Elaina Housworth who competed in the triple jump. Housworth had a great showing in the triple jump as she posted a 12.46m jump to take home third place out of 26 competitors.
 
In Philadelphia, TSU saw its 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400 relay teams compete on Friday, with the men's 4x400 team qualifying for Saturday's final race after posting a 3:15.13 and finishing in 7th in the qualifying round. The team consisting of Morgan Jones, Quest Agee, Thurman McMullen, and Nigel Simon logged 9th place in Saturday's final after clocking a 3:16.80.
 
In Nashville, Olivia Allison finished in 26th out of 39 in the long jump after posting a 5.23m leap, while grabbing an 8th-place finish in the triple jump with an 11.54m mark.
 
Leilany Laureano performed well in the shot put, finishing in 17th of 37 with a 12.42m toss. The sophomore logged a 15th-place finish in the discus throw with a 39.41.
 
On the men's side, the 4x400 relay team of Kylen Thorps, Chazz Brown, Robert Hooper, and Joshua McClendon finished in 4th place with a 3:17.93.
 
In the 800m run, TSU saw Chazz Brown earn a top-10 finish as he came in 8th of 40 with a 1:53.09. Hooper finished in 14th with a 1:53.85.
 
In the field events, Kenyon Johnson took home first in the triple jump with a mark of 14.86m, followed by Keandric Verge who finished in 5th with a 14.64.
 
The Flying Tigers took spots 3-5 in the long jump as David Dorsey took third with a 7.41m jump. Verge finished one spot back in 4th (7.37m), while Johnson took 5th (7.28m). Jonathan Wade claimed a 6th-place finish in the high jump with a 1.96.
 
Forrest Saffo logged a 6th-place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 52.71m.
 
The Flying Tigers and Tigerbelles will be back in action on May 9-11 as they will compete in the Ohio Valley Conference Championships in Charleston, Ill.
