A brawny, entertaining spectacle, but lacking emotional resonance.

Martha B This masterpiece is my absolute favorite movie of all time. Fiercely Passionate, with an outstanding musical soundtrack. With actors immersed in their roles. The scenery is breathtaking with the mist of the aroma ancient life. You could almost believe that you have taken a jump in time. You feel every moment and every second. Regardless of the critiques and possible improvements argued. This movie does exactly what it is suppose to do by leaving it's imprint in the clay of time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Joe W Not one of Brad's better performances. He's wooden. But this movie has more problems: a dialog that sounds semi-Shakespearean and where every line of dialog tries to be profound. Safe to skip this one. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Yash B "Troy" is a very good action blockbuster. As a movie, I really enjoyed this one. It is a movie that is on the longer side, but it quickly got me engaged and continuously entertained me with spectacle. There are memorable big-scale battles and exhilarating one-on-one fight sequences throughout this movie. I do feel it is a bit on the silly side at times, but for the most part, I was invested in the characters and the conflict the movie presented. Overall, it feels like an old-school blockbuster which was a bit refreshing and I think if you watch the movie for entertainment value, it features plenty of it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/24 Full Review Terry H One of those movies I find myself drawn back to watching every few years and with each viewing seems to get better. You don't see this period covered much in cinema which is one of the elements I like about it. The costumes are great, the battle scenes great, and its a very visual pleasing movie. Peter O'Toole is outstanding in this role. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Marina B It was horrible! It took the Iliad and spat on it. Nothing was true to the actual poem, or to actual historical records! They reduced the infamous Rage of Achilles to a mere temper tantrum, and had him weeping over the corpse of Hector rather than the corpse of his beloved companion. The gods don't show up once! Diomedes, for all his importance in the Iliad, is never even mentioned, and Odysseus is merely a face with a name. I spent the majority of the movie seething at the horrible representation of such a beautiful, beautiful epic poem. The Iliad deserved so much better, the Trojan War deserved so much better, and I hope that one day they both get what they deserve. This movie took a masterpiece and made a mockery of it. Will Self London Evening Standard Brad is worth the ticket price alone and others turned in creditable performances, particularly Eric Bana as an upright family man who just happens to be the prince of a warlike city-state, and Sean Bean as Odysseus the Ironic. Jan 9, 2018 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Violent, watered-down version of The Iliad. Rated: 3/5 Dec 29, 2010 Full Review Jessica Winter Time Out A numbingly reliable tick-tock of expository set pieces alternating with vast CGI-aided battle scenes. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Steve Warren Southern Voice (Atlanta) In terms of historical accuracy, Troy is probably on par with Van Helsing. But for balancing intimate stories with spectacular battles in an old-school-sized epic, it's closer to Gladiator. Rated: 3/4 May 7, 2023 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand ... it’s hard to take the cataclysmic events of this ancient war seriously, as it is entirely predicated on an unconvincing romantic gesture of a prince with the impulse control of a spoiled brat and the political consideration of a cat in heat. Jul 5, 2022 Full Review Robin Holabird Robin Holabird Petersen puts an effects-generated, action-film spin on the Trojan War, focusing on spectacle rather than emotional nuance. While this undermines acting opportunities by downplaying personalities, it works on a popcorn entertainment level. Aug 11, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
