Lara Dutta On Stringent Pay Disparity That Women Fight Against In Bollywood, Says, 'We Work As Hard'

Lara Dutta is a force to reckon with in the Hindi film industry, and the former Miss Universe has made a name for herself incomparable to others. Known for her bold and upright persona, the diva never minces her words when it comes to stating raw facts and truths. For the unversed, Lara made her debut in 2003 with the film, Andaaz, and ever since, there has been no turning back for her professionally. In her personal life, the actress is married to Indian tennis player, Mahesh Bhupathi, and the couple is blessed with a daughter, Saira.

Lara Dutta discusses how the perennial problem of pay disparity hasn’t been resolved in Bollywood

In a recent interaction with the Indian Express, Lara Dutta opened up about the one unsolved issue in the working of the Hindi film industry, and that is pay disparity. Well, from very early on, actresses or any women employed in the entertainment business have been remunerated less than their male counterparts. Moreover, female artists get paid less even though they put in the same amount of work. Talking about the same, Lara said:

“We work as hard, if not harder, than most of our male counterparts in the business, but most women still get paid, if they are lucky, one-tenth of what the actor gets paid.”

Lara reveals how film industry has evolved in the matter of labelling shelf life for an actress

However, amongst most cons, Lara Dutta credited it feels great to witness how over the years, the film industry has stopped labelling actresses with an age-based shelf-life. While earlier, a leading diva’s career who got married and had kids was considered to be over, now, it hasn’t been the same. Addressing the change of perception, Lara mentioned:

“It’s in process and there are a lot of wonderful women that have been a part of moulding that change in perception. I  never faced that. I am in my 40s now and I haven’t stopped working. For me, it was just simpler but also more chaotic. The professionalism has come in with a lot of corporates and studios, and it has become more streamlined.”

When Lara Dutta recalled thrashing up a man who tried to harass her in public

In another of her earlier interviews with Hauterrfly, Lara Dutta remembered a shocking episode in her life, which happened during the music launch of her debut film, Andaaz in Delhi. The actress remarked how the event took place in the over-crowded locality of Chandni Chowk, and somehow, a rude person tried to pinch her on the waist. Adding how her subconscious alertness helped her identify the person and beat him up, Lara narrated:

“It was my first film, it was my first time as an actress and I was wearing a saree that day. Someone in the crowd sneaked in their hand and pinched me on my waist. I almost had some intuition, maybe this was military training, that you can sense that something is wrong. The moment that hand came in, I held that hand and I pulled out that guy from the crowd. I was in a saree and I thrashed him like anything.”
