This is the timeline of events in the Trolls franchise.

Note: This page contains spoilers for various parts of the Trolls storyline - movies, TV series and otherwise.

About This Timeline

Due to some events not having dates, each event is in an approximate order, since there are no official year dates that can be worked with. Therefore, some events may actually be in a different order.

This timeline includes both canon and non-canon, and is designed to give an idea of the order of events and when they're set. All source material is marked on if they're canon or non-canon. In regards to movies and TV series, they're considered separate franchise entities from each other and often have conflicts over what's canon and what's not, so they're treated as different canon continuities; regardless, both are included here to show their relations to each other and where their respective stories lay.

Only the Trolls comics storylines cannot be fully placed within a fixed timeline; this is because of their nature collectively. In addition, promotional material such as the Troll 2 Troll shorts aren't taken into account as they seem to have no place in the actual timeline.

Due to some inconsistency with the films, events in Trolls: The Beat Goes On! and Trolls: TrollsTopia don't always line up with events of the films' storyline. The ones that do are mentioned on the page, but the following cannot be placed due to storyline conflicts:

  • King Peppy's adventures - According to "Sorry Not Sorry", at least 3 generations of kings have ruled Bergen Town. This is the only length of time for the events of Trollstice to take place. However, this causes conflict with the storyline of Trolls. King Peppy was said to have gone on many adventures during his youth, but that would have meant he would have left the Troll Tree to take part in those adventures, such as the discovery of the Fountain of Glitter. This would be impossible due to the surrounding Bergen Town.
  • Branch's childhood - Branch is shown as a child in "Fun Branch" and "Bringing Up Birdy". Due to the bars of the cage surrounding the Troll Tree being able to be seen when Grandma Rosiepuff is snatched it can be confirmed he lived in the Troll Tree. It's also known that he turned grey when she was grabbed. But in neither event is he grey, with Bringing Up Birdy being a clear indication it took place post-Trollstice. He also mentions his grandma going to the market in "Fluffleberry Quest", but this also causes problems as to where she got the ingredients from to make the Fluffleberry cake, and where the Plushroom she used to make the plate came from. In "A Flower For Poppy", Branch mentioned losing his favorite toy in the escape from Bergen Town, even though in Trolls he, nor any other member of The Snack Pack besides Poppy, were seen during the escape itself.
  • H.U.G.G., Extreme Sleepover Club, Bad Hair Day and Blaze and the Blazing Blazes - Those aforementioned groups don't have enough information on them to say how long they've been going on for.

Pre-Bunker Era

Pre-Movies (Trolls World Tour)

The Founding of music

Sources
There are multiple versions of this story:

The ancestors of the Trolls lived a dull life. Until one day, one of them made a sound the others liked. Inspired by the sound, they took six Strings, one for each kind of music: Techno, Country, Classical, Rock, Pop and Funk. With these strings, the Trolls made a big party. The Strings governed all the six major music genres and everything in between.

The Party Ends

Sources
There are multiple versions of this story:

There are three versions of the events:

  • King Peppy - Peppy gives a simple explanation that the differences between the Troll Tribes led to an argument, and the elders decided each Tribe should go their own separate way. From then on, the Tribes would have no further contact with each other.
  • Funk Trolls - the Funk Trolls recorded a more accurate and detailed version of the events. The reason for the Trolls splitting was due to the Pop Trolls stealing the Strings and refusing to let the other five Tribes play their music. The Tribes eventually stopped the Pop Trolls from hauling the Strings, but the event had divided the Tribes, and they split as the Elders decided the risk wasn't worth it.
  • Funk Trolls (novelization) - in this version, the Troll Tribes gathered in one place to sing and dance, which created a magical instrument from where any kind of music could be made. However, the Pop Troll Tribe came up with simple, catchy lyrics that soon dominated everything. Their song filled the night sky, and as a result frightened the other Tribes due how colorful the night sky had become. They each grabbed a string from the instrument and separated them to save all music.

The Funk Trolls' version is considered the true history. Regardless, the event left every Tribe wary of each other from this point onward. The Pop Trolls would be left with the harp in which the Strings were once housed in. The novelization version contains elements of cut content, which are also referenced in Just Sing.

Legacy of the Separation

Sources
There are multiple versions of this story:

The Trolls settled in distant lands, with the Pop Trolls settling in the Troll Tree, the Funk Trolls founding Vibe City, the Rock Trolls establishing Volcano Rock City, the Country Trolls building up Lonesome Flats, the Classical Trolls founding Symphonyville, and the Techno Trolls settling in Techno Reef.

According to further promotional material, the Pop Trolls' actions had caused the Funk Trolls to become afraid of losing their music again. They flied to the furthest part of Troll Kingdom to get as far away from them as they could, out of fear of what Pop would do to their beloved Funk music again.

Meanwhile, the Rock Trolls harbored a disdain for the Pop Trolls, and came to despise them for what they had done. By the time of the events of Trolls World Tour, the Pop Trolls would be considered a disease by Queen Barb.

In a cut scene from Trolls World Tour, it was supposed to be revealed that the Country Trolls had never seen bipedal Trolls before, indicating that they had no contact with non-Country Trolls for some time. This also meant they had lost the knowledge of the existence of such other Trolls.

Likewise in Trolls World Tour: The Junior Novelization, the Techno Trolls became cut off from the other Trolls, as King Trollex states "they don't get much mail down here in Techno Reef".

To hide their contribution to the divide of the Tribes, the Pop Trolls rewrote their history so future Pop Troll generations wouldn't know what their ancestors had done. The Pop Trolls would go on to neglect to talk about their role in the separation of the Tribes. In addition, very few Pop Trolls would even come to know about the other Tribes in years to come; thus, the Pop Trolls would be just referred to as "Trolls".

The current rewrite of the Trolls' history was later done by Poppy. She added that their ancestors were incorrect in their assumptions, and came to the wrong solution by isolating themselves from each other.

The Tribes would have no contact with each other for some time.

Other Pre-Movie Events

This is known to have taken place at the Troll Tree.

The Troll Tree

Sources
There are multiple versions of this story:
Thelasttrolltree

The Pop Trolls are left stranded and surrounded by Bergen Town.

The Bergens build Bergen Town around the last Troll Tree, where the Pop Trolls were imprisoned.

There are two versions of of how the Trolls became restricted to just the tree, both non-canon as Trolls doesn't actually say what happened. It just shows the Tree and then the town being built around it.

  • The Trolls were eaten until one tree remained. This version, seen in Trolls: The Junior Novelization, implies that most of the Pop Troll population was eaten by the Bergens.
  • The Trolls were gathered and placed in the Troll Tree for future devouring. This is the version seen in The Legend of Hug Time.

The Bergens begin the tradition of Trollstice.

At some point, Bergen Castle is built, and King Gristle Sr. becomes King. He has a son named Prince Gristle. Chef becomes a renowned chef among the Bergens, and is hired to be the castle's royal chef. She enjoys the merits that come with the role, and likes being in "control" of the Troll Tree.

It is unknown how long this period lasted, but King Gristle Jr. mentions his father and grandfather in the Trolls: The Beat Goes On! episode Sorry Not Sorry, indicating that Bergen Town had seen at least two Kings during this period.

The Death of Branch's Grandma

The Trolls manage to get out of Bergen Town via a tunnel system, and make it to freedom. However, during the escape and during the choas, Peppy looses sight of his daughter Viva and a number of Trolls, with her last memory of him being him shouting "No Troll left behind". A rock falls, separating her and a number of Trolls, forcing Peppy to leave them behind. The group of seperated Trolls, which also included Clay, take a different route away from Bergen Town.

Poppy is kept safe throughout the escape in Peppy's hair. In Trolls: The Beat Goes On!, Branch is mentioned to have also been in this event.

Once outside, the Trolls put as much distance as they can between them and Bergen Town.

That night, King Gristle Sr. tries to calm the crowd of angry Bergens by blaming Chef for the Trolls' escape.

2435933

Chef is thrown out of Bergen Town. She bitterly vows to find the Trolls.

The Pop Trolls who escaped with Peppy found Troll Village. Viva and the other Trolls with her end up far away and in the complete opposite direction to the rest of the Pop Troll Tribe, forcing them to find a different home.

Chef begins a 20-year search in Troll Forest to find the Trolls and get her lost position back.

According to the Trolls: TrollsTopia episode "The Trolls-a-Thon", the Pop Trolls ran for 30 minutes, then another 7 minutes. They then feasted on the only food from Bergen Town: a giant Bergen-sized Jelly Doughnut. But first, they ran for another 4 minutes. She states that the Trolls run the Trolls-a-Thon, an annual running marathon which happens every year.

The Bergen King Steps Down

Sources
There is one version of this story:

Eventually, the angry Bergens are too much for King Gristle Sr., who steps down. He departs Bergen Town and is never seen again. Prince Gristle becomes King Gristle Jr. at a young age, due to the Bergens wanting a ruler who complies with them more.

The consequences are that Viva bars any Troll from leaving the village for their own safety and they spend the next 20 years preparing for Bergen attacks.

Sources

Though she begins at some point to try and bring Branch back to the village, this often brings conflict between the Snack Pack and Branch due to his heavy negativity. He gets seen as just a negative, paranoid hermit. Her attempts are based on the ideal she believes that even he has happiness inside of him, and according to Trolls: The Junior Novelization, is a misinterpretation of her father's speech "No Troll left behind". Branch resists all attempts to bring him back to the village.

During the rescue attempt, Creek appears to be eaten. Unconvinced he is dead, Poppy tries to save him despite Branch telling her he is dead. Chef tells Bridget to keep the Trolls safe in her room. She complies, but this does not stop Poppy and Branch following her. Once the others are saved, they accidentally wake Bridget. Poppy and Bridget come to an agreement to help Bridget get a date with Gristle in exchange for information on Creek. Moments afterwards, Branch tells the others why he's always unhappy. They dress Bridget up under the name of "Lady Glittersparkles".

The date works, and it turns out Creek is still alive. Poppy leaves Bridget, who's unconvinced she can pull off any further interactions with Gristle. During the rescue of Creek, Poppy and the Trolls are captured. Creek reveals that he made a deal to give up the rest of his village in exchange for his life. He lures them out and the entire village is captured.

The Trolls are all thrown in a cooking pot, losing their colors as they give up hope. Branch, who hasn't sung or danced in 20 years, brings back Poppy's hope by singing to her and cheering her up. Bridget frees the Trolls to save them all from being eaten, willing to sacrifice herself for the sake of her new friends. Poppy is unable to leave Bridget to her fate, and rescues her by revealing to Girstle that she's Lady Glittersparkles. Poppy then explains the Bergens that they don't need to eat Trolls to feel happy. The Bergens and Trolls celebrate.

King Peppy decides during their party that Princess Poppy should now become Queen Poppy, and crowns his daughter as the new ruler of their village.

2438168

  • They're both banished, with Creek left to be Chef's scrubbing brush. This fate is mentioned as a rumor in Trolls: The Junior Novelization and Branch and the Cooking Catastrophe.

Trolls World Tour

Sources
There are multiple versions of this story:

Queen Barb begins her Rock World Tour. She plans to capture all the Trolls and take their Strings and turn the entirety of Troll Kingdom into one nation under the genre of Rock. She starts her Rock World Tour by taking the Techno trolls and their string. Poppy is shown getting ready for the day, singing, dancing, and being cheerful as always. During the events of the Rock World Tour, Barb gets annoyed with Poppy after a glitter bomb explodes in her face. She sends the Bounty Hunters Chaz the Smooth Jazz Troll, Tresillo and his Reggaeton Trolls, The K-Pop Gang, and the Yodellers after Poppy. She proceeds to attack the Techno, Classical, Country and Pop Trolls.

Tiny Diamond is born.

Poppy learns the existence of the other five Tribes from her father, who has kept this a secret from her; he advises her to run. Upon hearing of the other Tribes, Cooper decides to leave to see if he can find other Trolls just like him. His journey takes him to the Funk Trolls where he learns that not only he's a Funk Troll, but he's also a member of The Funky Family.

Poppy begins her quest to unite the Troll Tribes against Barb. Branch follows her, fearful for his Queen. Biggie also tags along but by accident. When they arrive at the Classical Trolls' home of Symphonyville, Poppy ensures Biggie they'll be safe via a Pinky Promise. At Lonesome Flats, the trio are arrested when Poppy tries to "cheer up" the Country Trolls with a fun energetic medley (which she ropes Branch, Biggie and even Mr. Dinkles into performing with her), since the Country Trolls didn't like it. They escape thanks to Hickory, with Delta Dawn and several other Country Trolls, including Clampers and Growley Pete in tow. They proceed down a river, where Chaz attacks and easily overcomes the four Trolls, tying up Branch, Poppy and Biggie, but Hickory avoids capture and kicks him away. Biggie freaks out as Poppy is unable to keep them safe despite her Pinky Promise, and leaves to Pop Village. At Vibe City, Poppy is told the true story, and King Quincy refuses to let the Pop Trolls help the Funk Trolls in fighting against Barb. Cooper sends his friends and Hickory on their way as they go to fight the Rock Trolls.

On their own, Branch finally puts his foot down on Poppy's attitude towards the mission, stating that differences do matter to the Trolls and that she's not been listening to anyone. They part ways. Poppy is captured by Barb when Hickory exposes he's really a Yodelling Troll, and his back end was actually his brother Dickory. Meanwhile Branch is taken by the K-Pop Gang and Tresillo, though manages to convince the two groups to not fight over him, but rather take him to Barb.

Meanwhile, Biggie returns to a destroyed Pop Village. He and the remaining Snack Pack members try and go save their friends. The group ends up on stage with Barb, unable to do anything to help them.

At her victory concert, Barb goes to hit Poppy with the Ultimate Power Chord, which would convert her into a Rock Zombie, but Branch puts himself in the way and is therefore converted into the first Rock Zombie instead. Barb then proceeds to transform the Troll Tribe leaders. As she hits Poppy, unknown to her Poppy has stuffed gumdrops in her ears, and though is converted is not a zombie and retains her true personality.

Poppy smashes the guitar, ending Barb's plan but seemingly destroying all music in the process. The Trolls stand grey because Pop has destroyed everything again like in the past. Cooper's heart begins to beat with the sound of music, with his brother Prince D joining in. The Trolls realize they no longer need the Strings and can make music without them. The Trolls are restored as a nation united by their differences, with Barb becoming friends with Poppy. Poppy and Branch start a relationship, and everyone comes together for a big victory party at Pop Village.

A side note related to this is the ackowledgement of mousse and gel in Troll 2 Troll by Poppy and Branch.
