Trolls: Holiday in Harmony is a 30-minute animated Christmas special that follows the events of Trolls World Tour, serves as a follow-up to Trolls Holiday, and is the second TV special in the DreamWorks Trolls franchise. It was aired on November 26, 2021 on NBC, after being announced in February 2021 TV listings.

It was written and directed by Sean Charmatz and Tim Heitz and produced by DreamWorks Animation. A majority of the cast from the second movie reprise their respective roles, including Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Rachel Bloom, and Kenan Thompson as Poppy, Branch, Barb, and Tiny Diamond; likewise, Lauren Mayhew and Megan Hilty reprise their respective roles as Val Thundershock and Holly Darlin' from Trolls: TrollsTopia. The special also features famous actress and comedian Carol Burnett as the voice of Wind Breeze.

Synopsis

Poppy is planning a "secret gift swap" for all of Trolls Kingdom. When both Poppy and Branch end up drawing each other's name, things take an unexpected turn. Both are at a loss finding the perfect gift for the most important troll in their lives. Meanwhile, Tiny Diamond comes down with a bad case of writer's block while trying to think of a holiday rap for his dad, Guy Diamond. On the journey to get his flow back, Tiny will meet new friends that guide him to look through the clutter. Will Poppy and Branch finally come up with the perfect gift idea for one another? DreamWorks' Trolls: Holiday in Harmony will light-up the holiday season with festive traditions, musical moments and heartfelt humor for audiences around the world!

Plot

Branch appears naked and proceeds to dress himself. He's then picked up by Poppy in Sheila Balloon. Poppy compliments Branch's bowtie and Branch puts his wearing of one down to the season. Branch presents Poppy with Mitternsettia flowers, her favorite, but it turns out she's allergic to them; she sneezes all the petals over Branch and he tosses them out of the balloon. Branch asks about the baskets, presuming they're going on a picnic. He questions this, as they were supposed to hang out over the whole of Troll Kingdom, to which Poppy says they're still doing that but multitasking.

She explains that each basket is full of invitations; each one has the name of another Troll in Troll Kingdom. The Troll has to buy a secret gift for that Troll. The Trolls will meet in Pop Village in 3-days time to exchange gifts. Though Branch is unwilling to help when she asks, Poppy acknowledges he's onboard, and the pair sing as they deliver gifts around Troll Kingdom, visiting Symphonyville, Techno Reef, Lonesome Flats, Volcano Rock City and Vibe City before finally finishing in Pop Village. At Pop Village, Tiny Diamond rushes to grab and invitation and with help from Legsly grabs one. He pulls his father's name "Guy Diamond". Tiny does a rap, but finds it hard to rhyme "Diamond" and ends up with "Mimond". Legsly suggests he has lost his "Flow".

When they're done, Poppy and Branch pick out the last cards and pull out each other's names, with Poppy excited to have pulled Branch's name and Branch horrified he pulled Poppy's. Nervously, both part ways.

In a swamp, Tiny meets a Rhyme-a-saurus, and tries to explain him his situation with his rap for his father, but the creature proves no help as he wants Tiny to rhyme "climate". Tiny shows the current rhyme to the creature and rhymes with "climate", but he can't work with the concept. The creature then points him to Wind Breeze. When Tiny asks how to find her, the creatures point to her "right there".

In Pop Village, Trolls are already gathering and busy. Poppy drifts by Riff, who is staring at two identical jumpers and tells him to go "with that one", to which Rift thanks her. King Trollex is having issues putting a comb in a box until Poppy shows him the way around. Barb and Val Thundershock arrive, and Barb comments on the size of the present, but Poppy won't mention who the gift is for to the pair. However, she breaks as they turn away and tells them it's for Branch. Barb comments that getting her boyfriend must be a lot of pressure. Poppy ensures the pair she has it covered and she asks Barb whose gift she is buying for. She says it's for Mr. Dinkles, but has no idea who that is, Poppy tells her its Biggie's pet, whom Barb thinks is awesome. When Barb doesn't know what to get him, Poppy tells her to get a hat, as Mr. Dinkles lost his old one.

Branch is in his bunker with Prince D and Cooper, panicking on what to get Poppy due to her being "the ultimate gift giver". The twins comment that he has a nice visual board and it is not at all insane-looking. Branch is worried about going too small and disappointing her or too big it would freak her out, with both being the end of their relationship. Branch confuses the Funk Twins with his maths for a gift, but comes out saying he will make her a gift that saves time. He invents the first Troll hair-do'er, but has to now go to her place to get her head measurements without her knowing, causing the Twins to give concerned expressions at how creepy it sounds.

Guy Diamond is looking for Tiny Diamond. Meanwhile, Tiny is with Wind Breeze, who comments that his father is quite worried about him. She sprinkles some dust on him and he has a strange hallucination. When he wakes up, she comments his back should be completely healed, but Tiny comments he didn't seek her out for that. She sends him to the top of a mountain to seek out the monks at the Cloud Temple.

Meanwhile, Delta Dawn and Holly Darlin' are commenting on Poppy's gift to Branch. Branch sneaks behind Poppy and the two Country Trolls ask him what he is up to as Poppy talks. Branch sees a gift and asks if that is Poppy's gift, Holly interferes and says it's hers but Poppy did it up so pretty. Poppy steps in and says it is hers, then quickly whispers to the two Country Trolls to hide his actual gift while she distracts him. They say they have to go take care of their cats, which confuses him to ask when he got those. After they leave, they then reappear behind him and Poppy with a ladder and quickly cover up the name on the box. Branch says he came just to borrow wrapping paper and Poppy stuffs a handful to him and tries to rush him away. He gets out a camera and quickly snaps photos with a tape measure besides her head, before she can react. However, the last photograph snapped Holly and Delta rushing to cover up his name and he realizes that Poppy got his name.

Panicking that his gift won't be enough, he goes over the top and builds his machine, adding more and more functions constantly. The Funk Twins get worried and slowly build up a defense wall as parts fly everywhere. By the time he is finished, the machines build has gone overboard and the Twins worriedly build a bunker inside the bunker to protect themselves as Branch launches the machine. The machine explodes, sending him into space. There, he meets a Troll who asks him what he ended up getting Poppy.

At Cloud Temple, Tiny is meditating with the Clouds, but their vow of silence means they are not talking to him. At the bottom of a cup of tea, he sees the words "You already have the gift". He tosses it away and the words "Look through the clutter" appear. The leaves form a face that asks him "what makes him special?". As he answers "he is just my-", a Cloud rings a gong as he goes to say "daddy". He realizes he just has to rhyme "daddy" and has his rap sorted. As the Troll leaves, a female Cloud asks if his tattoo talked, a male Cloud notes she broke her vow of silence, and she notes the same. Both Clouds soon vanish as they are removed from the temple.

Tiny finds Branch on the ground. Branch believes he failed and tells him what happened. Tiny passes on the wisdom he just learnt and tells Branch to look through the clutter.

At his bunker, Branch is cleaning up the mess he made. While he does, he finds the photograph of him and Poppy. Delta Dawn comments that Poppy knows how to get gifts that make people feel special and Poppy hopes it will.

During the evening, the gift swap begins. Prince D wraps Fuzzbert in lights. Val bought Holly a cactus and Holly gave Val a never-break-guitar. Barb puts the hat that she bought for Mr. Dinkles on his head. As Poppy asks Branch who he got, everyone gathers around to see who the pair got. They agree to mention it at the same time. They laugh when they realize they got each others' names. Branch explains he made something for her that blew him up into a tree. He presents her with a scrapbook "Poppy and Branch's Great Adventure", which details all the events up until that day. Poppy comments that he scrapbooked it for her. She finds the gift wonderful, as it's only something he could give her; everyone is now eager to see what Poppy got Branch.

When he opens the box, it turns out to be empty and while the others looked confused, Branch thinks the gift is invisible. Poppy confesses she couldn't think of anything. Poppy says she drew a blank because Branch is the coolest Troll in the world who is sweet, kind, cute and overly prepared for anything.

Poppy and Branch hug as they realize they just need each other together, while the other Trolls find their gesture cute. Poppy asks for her ukulele and sings Together Now. During the song the other Trolls also join in the singing. As the song ends, the Clouds appear and snow on the Trolls. Branch then tells everyone not to eat the snow as they don't know where it's coming from. Subsequently, Branch and Poppy go off in the balloon - no multitasking, with Poppy kissing Branch.

Development

The directors of the special, Sean Charmatz and Tim Heitz commented in an interview that they had aways enjoyed the Peanuts specials and others the interviewer (Jackson Murphy of Animation Scoop) mentioned. Heitz was proud of the first special and how it turned out and there was excitement over the growth of the characters. The special continues the Trolls World Tour ending of everyone accepting each others differences. The duo wanted to explore the Poppy and Branch couple since they became "Official" with plot A being primarily focused on the pair.

Tiny Diamond was used as plot B with both stories tying together at the end. Each of Tiny's raps are different but fast-paced with a lot of teamwork involved to achieve them, noting they were fun to make.

Then directors also discussed bringing in a special entertainment icon (Carol Burnett), but were unable to comment on the character during this interview. The character (Wind Breeze) was created with her in mind and they ere excited to work with her. She put on her regular performance and was not asked to make it "Trolly".

There was also comments on Branch and Poppy's relationship and how the two accept each others' strengths and weaknesses, the song "Together Now" being their signature song. The song being written before the Covid crisis. Tim Heitz comments that he had been with DreamWorks since 2006 and Trolls had been the more fun franchises to work on.

Tim mentioned that they decided they wanted to open on Branch getting ready for his date and knew he would get ready in a very "action hero" style, similar to Batman suiting up. While quit-cut scenes are hard enough, Tim also mentioned its the quiet scenes where two characters are the focus is a challenge he loves. There is a question of when to cut the scene, which Troll to focus on each moment, how close to cut to that character.

Character Changes

Wind Breeze

Currently, the character known only by her Holiday in Harmony! book name of "Wind Breeze" has two designs. Since the book was made and released long before the special, her different appearance is likely a late production change. This was happened several times in the past with the DreamWorks Trolls franchise in the 3D animated productions, resulting in merchandise being produced with the incorrect design. This is an occurrence that has been on going since Trolls with characters such as Aspen Heitz and Prince Darnell from Trolls World Tour being examples.

Trivia

A crowd of Trolls and a Wally.

• When it was first announced in mid-2021, the Trolls Trollpedia had images related to the special. However, those images were later removed via official request under copyright rules. This was the first time this occurred to this wiki, and for several months later no images related to this special were allowed on the wiki for this reason.
• The special marks the first time where 2D animation characters have transitioned from 2D to 3D storyline. In this case, Val Thundershock and Holly Darlin' were the first two confirmed.
• There are some issues with canon media:
  • In the interview for the special, it was mentioned that the special would cover Branch and Poppy's first kiss. However, it was confirmed that Poppy hug-kissed Branch already in in the ending of Trolls World Tour during the zoom out shot after Just Sing; this makes their kiss in the special the second one.
  • Most of the issues come from the TV series. This is a common situation when it comes to DreamWorks animation, as movies and their TV shows often are made independently from each other.
    • Poppy's favorite flowers were first mentioned in the Trolls: The Beat Goes On! episode "A Flower For Poppy"; though they were never named, they were rose-like and different to the flowers shown in this special. Trolls: The Beat Goes On! is superseded by 3D media, meaning Mittensettias are officially her favorite flowers.
    • As with a lot of 3D and 2D canon issues, there are some issues when it comes to Trolls: TrollsTopia. If this special takes place before, then Val and Holly wouldn't be known to Poppy and the other Trolls. If it takes place during TrollsTopia, then there's no evidence in the special of TrollsTopia existing, and each of the entire Tribes are still in their home locations.
      • Tim Heitz confirmed that the special takes place a few weeks after Trolls World Tour, and that the Trolls: TrollsTopia show and special are separate entities.
    • This is the 4th and final 3D storyline to take place in the first year since Trolls was released.
• In a crowd scene can be seen; in this crowd, the main character "Wally" of Where's Wally? can be seen. DreamWorks had also produced their own TV series related to the character. The scene in question happens in the run up to Together Now.
  • This also marks the second time where a "human" representation has appeared in media related to the DreamWorks Trolls franchise, with one appearing from the thighs downwards in the Trolls World Tour movie itself during the Smooth Jazz hallucination.
• As with Trolls Holiday, there is a censored moment. This time, the censor is on King Thrash, who does an obscene gesture instead of the Rock hand gesture. The joke is a nod to to the Trolls having only three fingers, so instead of the outer and inner fingers sticking up, he did the opposite, resulting in him sticking his middle finger up and doing the wrong gesture by accident.
• The gag of "gravity does not work until you look down" occurs in this special twice, once when Tiny jumps off of Legsly and briefly floats in midair, and when Branch sees a troll doll in outer space.
• Like Trolls Holiday, a reference to the old Troll Dolls is seen. This time one is seen when Branch breaks through the sky into space, where he becomes a Troll Doll and meets an alien doll.
  • While the other Troll is a traditional Troll Doll based on the Dark Horse lineup, unlike in Trolls Holiday, Branch is represented by a modern Hasbro small range doll.
• After healing Tiny's back and during her talk with Tiny over the Cloud Template, Wind Breeze can be seen watching Trolls Holiday.
• The photograph where Branch finds of him and Poppy is the same photo he hid away in Trolls Wanna Have Good Times.
• The fan term for Branch and Poppy "Broppy" is mentioned when Sheila Balloon says "Team Broppy all the way!" at the end.
• The special is missing many Trolls from Trolls World Tour and Trolls: TrollsTopia who where part of the major cast, including missing members of The Snack Pack, who traditionally appear in most 3D and 2D Trolls media.
  • The special therefore marks the first time most of The Snack Pack are not featured as the main cast.
• Fuzzbert's gift from Prince D is lights, it is a nod to how he resembles a Christmas Tree in shape. This also has been referenced before in previous Trolls media.
• On his ideas board, one of Branch's drawings had "Cappuccino yes", a reference to Hickory's word when he built the raft in Trolls World Tour.
• Tim Heitz confirmed that the pages in Branch's scrapbook were chosen because they were special moments from both Trolls and Trolls World Tour, but while the staff never made more pages than that, he confirmed there were definitely other moments in there the audience didn't get to see.
