Liverpool news: Pundit fumes over controverisal Alexander-Arnold footage

Robinson fumes as controversial Trent Alexander-Arnold footage emerges from Liverpool – ‘it’s a joke’

Paul Robinson has claimed the application of the offside rule over the weekend was “a joke” after a comparison between incidents involving Liverpool and Man United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said Bruno Fernandes’ goal against Man City “should never of stood.”

Fernandes controversially scored in a 2-1 win for the Red Devils in the Manchester derby.

Marcus Rashford moved towards the ball in an offside position moments before the goal.

However, VAR awarded the goal as Rashford did not touch the ball.

As shown by Sky Sports (15 January), Trent Alexander-Arnold was given offside for a similar incident in Liverpool’s 3-0 loss to Brighton on Saturday.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the incidents, Robinson said: “That just shows the inconsistency.

“Fernandes’ goal should never of stood.

“I do not like that application of the law. I am a traditionalist. They should never have stretched the rules. If you ask any football fan or ex-player they will tell you that the goal should have been disallowed for offside. It was a farce.

“The offside rule has changed a lot in recent years and clearly in this instance it has not been changed for the better. It was a joke.

Man United

“It was such a pivotal moment in the game. Rashford moves towards the ball. How are the Man City players supposed to know that he is going to leave it at the last second to allow Fernandes to hit it. It should not have stood. It is as simple as that.

“You would be fuming if that was given against you. A bit of common sense needs to be used. Everyone knows that should never be given as a goal.”
