You want to know HOW to become a travel agent, and you’ve come to the right place. The Travel Institute has been preparing individuals for a successful future in the travel industry for nearly 60 years – it’s our specialty!

Master the basics

Our Travel Introductory Program, or TRIPKIT℠, is the perfect resource for those beginning their careers. TRIPKIT is built around two college-level textbooks and related workbooks, plus a series of recorded webinars on key topics. You’ll learn about the five core travel products, plus industry and agency workplace orientation and sales and marketing strategies. The program also delves into world geography and cultures, broken down by U.S. state, country, or region with an emphasis on trip planning.

After completing the course, students take the industry-recognized Travel Agent Proficiency, or TAP®, exam to test their newfound knowledge. A passing score on TAP is the first step toward advanced travel professional recognition as graduates showcase their accomplishment with customers and colleagues alike on their way to even greater success.

    1. Get certified. Earning your Certified Travel Associate (CTA®), Certified Travel Counselor (CTC®), or Certified Travel Industry Executive (CTIE®) designation tells your clients, co-workers, and staff that you are committed to excellence. Just like a well-respected MD or CPA, those certifications indicate your work ethic and industry expertise as a professional travel agent.
    2. Continue your education. Travel agents certified through The Travel Institute must complete a minimum of 10 hours of continued education each year. Our partnerships with more than 100 suppliers make life-long learning easy and enjoyable.
    3. Expand your expertise. Many choose to narrow their destination and niche/lifestyle sales strategy to be more effective. Our portfolio of specialty courses (print and/or online; varies by title) allows you to focus your learning on what matters most.
    4. Become a member. Enjoy a number of benefits, including all Specialization Courses, a 10-percent savings on all products/services, and access to all recorded webinars that you missed.

Travel Agent Proficiency Test

The TAP® test or Travel Agent Proficiency is the first step towards professional recognition. The test is a *proctored, consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions. Candidates are given two hours to complete the test.

*Proctor Requirements: A test proctor is required for this test. The proctor is someone chosen by the candidate and their responsibility is to be sure that the candidate isn’t using any books, notes or reference materials while testing. The proctor chosen should be a) over 21, b) not related to the candidate, and c) not currently preparing to take the TAP® test themselves.
