2020 Toyota Camry Expert Review

Staff Writer

A perennial bestseller in the midsize class for more than 30 years, the Toyota Camry was thoroughly redesigned for the 2018 model year with a focus on ride, handling, and styling improvements. Make no mistake, however: Especially in LE form, this is still the best choice when you want to roll incognito in a four-door sedan.

Offering four-cylinder, V-6, and hybrid powertrains, the 2020 Toyota Camry continues to provide a package promising safety and reliability. For the first time since 1991, all-wheel drive is available, but only on four-cylinder models.

  • All-wheel drive is a standalone option on LE trim levels and above
  • Finally, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are now standard

There's nothing wrong with being average: in fact, that's precisely where Camry's appeal lies. In both four-cylinder and V-6 versions, its mission is understated to the point of being unmemorable. In a comparison test against the Nissan Altima, we said "you'll get where you're going but forget how you got there."

That's not to say that the Camry isn't without sporting pretentions. The 2020 Camry TRD is designed to be geared to the enthusiast, even if it doesn't fully hit its mark. In our first drive of a TRD Camry, we admired the improvements in handling, noting that it is noticeably stiffer than a standard Camry and the brakes have a "better bite and feel," though sloppy transmission tuning and vague steering mean the TRD "isn't the on-road performer it could and should be."

The base engine in the 2020 Camry is a 2.5-liter I-4 producing 203 hp and 184 lb-ft, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. XSE models receive a bump to 206 hp and 186 lb-ft. Camry L models are rated at 29/34 mpg city/highway, with the Camry TRD rated at 22/31 mpg. Camry LE/SE models return 28/39 and XLE/XSE models are rated at 27/38.

Camry XSE and XLE models are available with an optional 3.5-liter V-6 producing 306 hp and 267 lb-ft. Fuel economy is 22/33 for the XLE, and 22/32 for XSE.

Camry Hybrid models pair a 2.5-liter I-4 with an electric propulsion motor for a total combined rating of 208 hp. Hybrid LE models are rated at 51/53 city/highway, and SE/XLE models return 44/47.

The Toyota Camry is a 2020 Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS, scoring Good in all categories, though lower trim model with non-adaptive LED headlights scored Acceptable. The Camry received a front crash prevention designation of Superior by the IIHS, as it fully avoided a collision in both the 12-mph low-speed autobrake and 25-mph high-speed autobrake tests.

The 2020 Camry received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars).

Every Camry comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense system, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with assist, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. XSE and XLE trims add a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.

The Toyota Camry is a midsize sedan with room for five. Front- and rear-seat legroom is 42.1 and 38.0 inches, respectively. Trunk space in Camry L measures 14.1 cubic feet, and 15.1 cubic feet in all other versions (including Hybrid). In all models but the base Camry L, the rear seats fold down in a 60/40 split configuration.

Camry L, LE, SE, and TRD models includes a six-speaker audio system controlled by a 7.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity with Amazon Alexa compatibility, one USB media port, 2 USB charge ports (except for L trim), advanced voice recognition and Bluetooth music streaming via Bluetooth wireless technology, and SiriusXM radio.

Camry XSE and XLE 4-cylinder models upgrade to an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with CD player, while XSE and XLE V-6 models gain a nine-speaker JBL audio system with subwoofer.

2020 Toyota Camry L: The base trim of the Camry features 16-inch wheels, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, a 7.0-inch color touchscreen infotainment system with six-speaker audio, SiriusXM radio, Wi-Fi hotspot as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

2020 Toyota Camry LE: This trim level adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, 8-way power driver's seat, 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback, and an anti-theft alarm system.

2020 Toyota Camry SE: Step up to SE and get 18-inch aluminum wheels, color-keyed rear spoiler, automatic climate control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

2020 Toyota Camry TRD: The sport-oriented model of the Camry features 19-inch aluminum wheels, gloss black aero trim and front grille, cat-back exhaust with polished tips, red-illuminated gauges, red seatbelts and seating inserts, red stitching on seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, instrument panel, shift boot and knob, aluminum pedals, and TRD-badged floormats.

2020 Toyota Camry XSE: This trim level includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with HD radio, textured metal interior trim, color-keyed heated mirrors with integrated turn signals and blind spot warning light, dual exhaust with chrome tips, panoramic moonroof on V-6 models, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless charging pad, 7.0-inch color instrument cluster display, leather seating, heated front seats, 8-way power passenger seat, full-range adaptive cruise control, overhead console with Homelink, three USB ports, electronic parking brake, paddle shifters, head-up display, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and remote keyless entry with pushbutton start.

2020 Toyota Camry XLE: The highest trim level builds on XSE and adds wood interior trim, LED headlight and taillights, bright metallic front grille, and 18-inch aluminum wheels.
