Toy Story 5 now officially has a release date. After the franchise got its start back in 1995, toys Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) would return for three sequels, the most recent of which hit theaters in 2019. A fifth movie was confirmed to be in development in early 2023, and it was later revealed that the film was expected to bow at some point in 2026.

A new report from THR now reveals that Toy Story 5's release date is officially set for June 19, 2026. This means there will be a seven-year gap between the upcoming film and the previous installment. Unfortunately, no story information about the film has yet been revealed.

It's not been officially confirmed whether the upcoming sequel will be the last, but previous films in the Toy Story franchise have previously felt like grand farewells. The emotional Toy Story 4 ending, for example, did have a sense of finality to it, and so did the ending to its 2010 predecessor. That is to say that the upcoming film may feature an ending that could serve as a franchise conclusion only for another movie to be announced in the years afterward.

Although the franchise has now spanned almost 30 years, the box office success of Toy Story 4 affirms that there is still interest in seeing the continued adventures of Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang. The latest film ended its run with $1.073 billion worldwide, a remarkable feat for the fourth installment in a franchise, especially one that hadn't released a new movie in close to a decade. If Toy Story 5 repeats this same level of success, or even gets close to it, there will likely be interest at an executive level in making a sixth movie.

Spinoff/ origin story movie Lightyear earned mostly positive reviews upon its release in 2022, but it underperformed at the box office. Part of the reason why the film failed is thought to be due to its confusing connection to its original franchise.

What remains unclear, however, is how likely original characters like Woody and Buzz are to be a part of whatever installment may come next. Both Hanks and Allen are expected to reprise their voice roles for Toy Story 5, but whether Woody and Buzz return again beyond that is seemingly dependent on how willing the actors are to continue playing the characters.
