11 Things to Know About Topper Mortimer
Tinsley Mortimer's ex recently married shoe designer Tabitha Simmons.
Robert Livingston "Topper" Mortimer, 42, does not welcome publicity as much as his ex-wife, Tinsley. (Through a friend, he declined a request for comment for this story.)
The couple eloped at 18 but annulled that union, later marrying at age 26 in 2002. In 2009, their divorce made headlines. Tinsley went on to star in a handful of reality shows, including the current Real Housewives of New York City; she also suffered a very public downfall after being arrested for trespassing at the home of an ex-boyfriend in Palm Beach in April 2016. While Topper has stayed more under the radar, here are a few things to know about him.
He married shoe designer Tabitha Simmons in New York City on June 9.
The couple wed at the Church of the Resurrection on the Upper East Side and had their after-party at Dorrian's; the star-studded guest list included Liv Tyler, Tory Burch, Lauren Santo Domingo, and Brooke Shields.
He and Simmons welcomed a daughter in January.
"Look what the stork brought me," Simmons wrote on Instagram January 30. "Please meet my darling daughter Violet Elizabeth Mortimer 🌸🌸 born yesterday 8lb 4oz 🕊." The girl is the first child for the couple. Simmons has two sons, 12-year-old Dylan and 13-year-old Elliott, from a previous marriage.
Mortimer and Simmons are engaged.
They celebrated their engagement over the weekend of August 19 with a party at Tory Burch's house in Southampton.
The two began dating in Fall 2014, according to the New York Post.
He works in finance.
Mortimer is on staff at the private investment firm Focus Point Private Capital Group.
He and Real Housewives of New York star Tinsley Mortimer met in boarding school.
The reality show star and Topper were high-school sweethearts at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey.
He never intended to be the subject of society columns and tabloids.
"It’s not necessarily the type of goal that anybody should strive for, going out every night for the sake of self-promotion and getting their pictures taken," he said in a 2007 New York Times interview. "And I mean, these are girls who went to good colleges. You would think they’d have something better to do."
In the same interview, his then-wife Tinsley chimed in, "Sometimes he forgets, when he’s on this subject, like: 'I know one of them. That’s my wife.'"
The New York Post named him one of the city's most eligible bachelors​.
In a January 2010 story, the newspaper wrote, "Although he's shy, the women he falls for are not: His ex, Tinsley Mortimer, is one of the city's most high-profile socialites, and he's currently dating Vogue's Valerie Boster." Mortimer is a great-grandson of Henry Morgan Tilford, a former president of Standard Oil and an early resident of Tuxedo Park, New York. He's also a descendant of the first chief justice of the United States, John Jay. His father, pictured here, died in 2013. His mother, Senga, is an editor at House Beautiful and Elle Decor.
