Summary

  • Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski has a "wonderful" idea for where the story will go in Top Gun 3.
  • Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise are excited about the Top Gun 3 story.
  • Both Miles Teller and Glen Powell are set to return in Top Gun 3, hinting at more aerial rivalry and camaraderie.

A further sequel in the popular Top Gun franchise is now in the works, and already has a story, according to the legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Discussing the potential of Top Gun 3 with Screen Rant, Bruckheimer revealed that Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski has a "wonderful" idea for where the story will go next, and it’s an idea that Hollywood icon and lead actor Tom Cruise loves.

However, while this all sounds pretty positive, it could be a little while before we see Maverick take to the skies once again in Top Gun 3. Cruise is currently busy saving the world and running around in Mission: Impossible 8, and the production of the third Top Gun is all dependent on his schedule.

“It will be Tom Cruise. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and he (Tom Cruise) said I really like that, so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.”

It is currently unknown what Top Gun 3 will be about, with the hugely successful Top Gun: Maverick wrapping up the story nicely and leaving few hints regarding where another sequel might go. However, it has been reported that both Miles Teller and Glen Powell will return as Lieutenant Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw and Lieutenant Jake "Hangman" Seresin respectively, so we can no doubt expect more friendly aerial rivalry.
