Since we're nearing the end of summer, my sons have been bickering more than usual, so the broader theme about sibling connection was especially touching. (The film provides good support for kids who are trying to make space for a new sibling, re: there's enough love for everyone.) And any film that liberally sprinkles The Beatles' "Blackbird" throughout both as a family lullaby and a metaphor for growing up together is likely to grab my heartstrings.
Another plus: the retro-style animation used in the kids' imagination scenes is reminiscent of Mary Blair's work for Disney - most notably on "It's a Small World" ride. The frequent changes in animation design are visually engaging and -- at times -- absolutely beautiful.
Overall a silly, sweet story for a lazy summer afternoon.
Seriously, you are just going to love the baby in this story, he is just the funniest and coolest kid in the world, you will want one just like him for a little brother... or maybe not <snicker>. When he first arrives in the taxi with his little suit on and a brief case that was when I knew I was going to buy the movie and yup, as soon as it was over I did just that.
If you are empty ''nesters be sure to bring your grown up kids home to watch this one you are all going to get a kick out of it.

Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: DreamWorks Animation invites you to meet a most unusual baby when ‘THE BOSS BABY,’ the "wildly funny" adventure comedy has arrived at last on the ultimate 3D Blu-ray visual format. Seven-year-old Tim Templeton [voice of Miles Bakshi] suddenly finds his share of parental love plummeting when his new baby brother Boss Baby [vice of Alec Baldwin] and arrives wearing a suit and toting a briefcase and makes it clear to everyone that he's in charge. But when Tim Templeton discovers that Boss Baby is on a secret mission, he reluctantly agrees to team up with his pint sized sibling for an epic adventure that might just change the world!
From the director of the hugely successful animated feature film ‘Madagascar’ franchise by director Tom McGrath that comes in this hilarious adventure-comedy about family and belonging. In addition to Alec Baldwin, ‘THE BOSS BABY’ features the stellar voice cast talents of Steve Buscemi, Jimmy Kimmel, Lisa Kudrow, Miles Bakshi and Tobey Maguire [Narrator].
Normally Seven-year old Tim Templeton has a fun life as an only child with his parents Ted and Janice Templeton. However, on the arrival of his new Boss Baby brother, Tim Templeton's ideal life turns upside down. Calling himself the Boss Baby, the new arrival wears a suit, talks like an adult and conducts meetings with other babies in the neighbourhood. Boss Baby connives with Tim Templeton to help him achieve a mission which will give him a promotion in Baby Corp. where he came from, and he will be gone from Tim Templeton's life for good and is only too willing to help.
The artwork by the Dreamworks Animation artists was really given us cuteness overload and with the adorable combination of babies and puppies was hard to resist, and the animation drawings capitalised on this throughout the animated film. Every funny baby and puppy behaviour has been played up to great comic effect. Those scenes showing Tim Templeton and Boss Baby sucking pacifiers together, wearing sailor outfits together, reading a story book together, among others, were really quite precious and heart-warming to see.
Alec Baldwin, of course, had a very authoritative tone as the Boss Baby as could be expected and you can hear a lot of the irony of his character in his voice. I was also very impressed with the lively vocal work of Miles Christopher Bakshi, who by the way is the grandson of animation legend Ralph Bakshi, matching Alex Baldwin's energy for the whole of the animated film. Although I thought Jimmy Kimmel and Lisa Kudrow had too little to say as Tim Templeton's parents to make a distinct vocal impression. Steve Buscemi was appropriately menacing as Francis E. Francis, the vindictive CEO of Puppy Co., and the main target of Boss Baby's mission. We get to hear the voice of Tobey Maguire as the adult Timothy, the narrator of the film.
I thought the first scenes of Tim Templeton vs. Boss Baby might be slightly disturbing for young children, especially showing sibling rivalry on a grand scale, but at the same time in a sort of very loveable way and some Parents might feel it was sending a negative message to any children watching that it was cool to be bossy or rude to others, but hey this is an animated film, not real life. It took time for me to warm up to this concept, which I feel a lot of the young viewers do not get or might take the wrong way. Parental might feel guidance with these particular scenes.
Later on in the animated film, I must confess that I did get caught up in all the cute foolishness of it all. Despite some plot holes in the main plot of the film, like the erratic process of the magic baby formula wearing off or the juvenile violence scenes where you think babies in mortal danger, but in the end coming to the rescue is pure brotherly love that still prevailed in the end, and that was one very important message that families and the world need to take to heart.
Despite their mutual distrust, Seven-year old Tim Templeton and the Boss Baby must form a reluctant alliance and bonding in order to engage in some highly classified industrial espionage, leading to a clever plot resolution that thoughtfully ties up all the loose ends. Of course, the concept of infants with not so infantile voices is nothing, but in the capable hands of director Tom McGrath and screenwriter Michael McCullers, ‘THE BOSS BABY’ has an agenda all its own right to the very end of the animated film.
While Alec Baldwin, who seems to have cornered the market when it comes to playing conceited man-babies, handily crawls away with the animated film and it is very hard to imagine anyone else in the role, gets solid backup from his fellow voice cast. They include Steve Buscemi as Francis E. Francis a former Baby Corp executive harbouring a serious grudge; Tobey Maguire, handling narration as Tim Templeton’s older self; and James McGrath (the director’s nephew) as Wizzie, Tim Templeton’s amusingly theatrical Gandalf-like, talking wizard alarm clock. It is fast-paced, witty and like ‘Toy Story,’ deals with love and replacement, albeit without the same depth of characterisation. Can Boss Baby and Seven-year old Tim Templeton infiltrate Puppy Co. and close down the operation before a sinister executive Francis E. Francis hits the launch button? ‘THE BOSS BABY’ combines energetic set-pieces with clever plotting, good jokes and plenty of heart all round like a joyous roller coaster ride.

Finally, ‘THE BOSS BABY’ 3D [2017] captures an energized Alec Baldwin who is comically commanding in this animated film confection from DreamWorks Animation. Words like "inventive" and "inspired" are very rarely applied to the parade of cookie-cutter animated features that pass through the multiplex each year, but The Boss Baby proves a refreshing exception. Based on the 36-page picture book by Marla Frazee and featuring the pitch-perfect voice of Alec Baldwin as a onesie suit-wearing, corporate-minded blessed arrival, this DreamWorks Animation effort is a delightful blend of clever and tender that's certain to tickle audiences of all ages. Visually, there’s a retro look and feel to the animation that plays affectionate homage to Looney Tunes legends Chuck Jones, Tex Avery and Friz Freleng, while simultaneously drawing upon new wrinkles in computer animation that allow the action to follow the lead of Tim’s vivid fantasy life. Those nostalgic underpinnings are also nicely incorporated into the appropriately bubbly score by Hans Zimmer and frequent collaborator Steve Mazzaro. Highly Recommended!
