First Loki trailer promises a madcap Marvel heist

Thank you, time travel!

While WandaVision will bring reality-bending antics to the Marvel universe, Disney Plus’ upcoming show Loki looks to take its own advantage of every rule-breaking door Avengers: Endgame opened. If you thought Loki was out of the picture after his run-in with Thanos, thank the time traveling Avengers.

In the first trailer for Loki, which broke as part of the deluge of announcements of Disney’s Investors Day, Tom Hiddleston’s Thor villain returns to play the role of antihero. We previously saw the God of Mischief in a Big Game spot wearing what looked to be a prison jumpsuit with the letters “TVA” stamped on it. Here’s what that means. The trailer gives us an even clearer look at what to expect.

Loki is written by Rick & Morty alum Michael Waldron. During a podcast appearance in March, he told fans to expect the show to dig deeper than ever into the character’s psychology.

“I think it’s the struggle with identity, who you are, who you want to be. I’m really drawn to characters who are fighting for control,” said Waldron. “Certainly, you see that with Loki over the first 10 years of movies, he’s out of control at pivotal parts of his life, he was adopted and everything and that manifests itself through anger and spite towards his family.”

Like WandaVision, Loki is expected to tie directly into 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Given that the first Doctor Strange was big on time manipulation, Loki may get a shout-out or appearance in that movie as well. And there’s always the upcoming Disney Plus series She-Hulk. In the comics, the TVA helped Jen Walters’ law firm during a time-travel related trial, and she nearly wound up on the wrong end of the the Ret-Can herself at one point.

The next level of puzzles.
