From the magical moments on set as Draco Malfoy to the challenges of growing up in the spotlight, get a backstage pass into Tom Felton’s life on and off the big screen in this #1 New York Times bestseller.
Tom Felton’s adolescence was anything but ordinary. His early rise to fame in beloved films like The Borrowers catapulted him into the limelight, but nothing could prepare him for what was to come after he landed the iconic role of the Draco Malfoy, the bleached blonde villain of the Harry Potter movies. For the next ten years, he was at the center of a huge pop culture phenomenon and yet, in between filming, he would go back to being a normal teenager trying to fit into a normal school.
Speaking with great candor and his signature humor, Tom shares his experience growing up as part of the wizarding world while also trying to navigate the muggle world. He tells stories from his early days in the business like his first acting gig where he was mistaken for fellow blonde child actor Macaulay Culkin and his Harry Potter audition where, in a very Draco-like move, he fudged how well he knew the books the series was based on (not at all). He reflects on his experiences working with cinematic greats such as Alan Rickman, Sir Michael Gambon, Dame Maggie Smith, and Ralph Fiennes (including that awkward Voldemort hug). And, perhaps most poignantly, he discusses the lasting relationships he made over that decade of filming, including with Emma Watson, who started out as a pesky nine-year-old whom he mocked for not knowing what a boom mic was but who soon grew into one of his dearest friends. Then, of course, there are the highs and lows of fame and navigating life after such a momentous and life-changing experience.
Tom Felton’s Beyond the Wand is an entertaining, funny, and poignant must-read for any Harry Potter fan. Prepare to meet a real-life wizard.

“[The] hook of Felton’s memoir is his perspective on living a one-in-a-billion experience. Yet “Beyond the Wand” is most insightful when Felton translates his tale into something more universal. Sure, the “boy who lived” was never Draco’s moniker — but considering his eventful existence, it suits Felton just fine.”―The Washington Post
"A surprisingly deep memoir from the actor who brought a memorable villain to the big screen."―Kirkus Reviews
"Missing Hogwarts? Tom Felton, who played white-haired villain Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise, bas written about the magical moments on set and an adolescence within the pop culture phenomenon."―Parade
"Tom Felton has penned a brilliant memoir about growing up playing an iconic role in the series. . . [W]ith the type of honesty that comes with time and self-reflection, Felton also writes about his past struggles with alcohol and his time in rehab. It’s a beautiful memoir — with a forward by Emma Watson herself — that captures the heart, charm, and wittiness of the man beyond the wand."―Buzzfeed
"An honest, at times humorous, and entertaining memoir that movie buffs, especially Harry Potter fans, will enjoy."―Library Journal
"Beyond the Wand is so much more than fan service. With introspection and charm, Felton’s narrative captures the growing pains of adolescence."―BookPage
"Actor Felton, best known for his portrayal of bleached-blond antagonist Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, recounts his career in his charming debut memoir. . . Felton weaves a seamless, sensitive narrative that will enchant Potterheads and fans of celebrity memoirs alike."―Publishers Weekly
"[Beyond the Wand] is full of colorful Wizarding World lingo, referring to “aparrating” objects and his “muggle family,” making it fun for die-hard “Harry Potter” fans. . . It’s basically a wizarding world gold mine."―Deseret News

Some parts of his real life, when he was grown-up and away from the Potter business, were sad and dramatic - suddenly the reader was thrown a curve-ball. It was a surprise for the book to suddenly change direction in the last few chapters, from light-weight to heavy....
Felton's memory of his childhood acting experiences were interesting, even putting to right some Draco myths.
The writing was only a fraction preachy. At the end.
From the magical moments on set as Draco Malfoy to the challenges of growing up in the spotlight, get a backstage pass into Tom Felton’s life on and off the big screen with this audiobook read by the author.

What I thought:
This book was amazing! Tom ripped his heart open and laid it all out there for us. He was funny heartfelt and relatable. You will leave this story feeling like you got to know who Tom is outside of being Draco Malfoy. He has always been my favorite Harry Potter actor, after this book he forever will be.

I hated how slowly I got through it, but it was something I read a couple chapters of over the weekends when I had the time, and thankfully, Tom split his book up into such nice little chapters that it was easy to knock of a few and stop for a few days and then be able to return to his tale right where I left off.
Everything about this, I loved. The forward by Emma Watson nearly had me in tears. HIs early life is so fun and well, normal, but interesting nonetheless. His early years of acting. The first movie I ever saw him in, which was The Borrowers (which I only put together a few years ago).
And of course, Harry Potter. The auditioning. Which, let’s be honest, Tom MADE Draco. He might have tried for other parts but no one was a better Ron and Harry than Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe, and no one could have been a better Draco, so the movie people definitely knew what they were doing. How they knew he was the ideal kid to be Draco, his story behind it, made it all the better. He speaks so fondly of all his cast, not just the main three, but the others, especially the older cast. It’s one thing to be friendly with your child co-stars, but I loved his stories of meeting the adults.
The filming secrets were cool too. Little insights you sometimes hear about on documentaries and such, but I’ve never heard these ones. Such as the filming of when Draco gets injured by Buckbeak in movie 3. Or the fact his grandfather is in movie 1 in the quidditch stands! I lived for Tom’s recollection of these fun facts.
His talk of Emma honestly had me in near tears. It’s a well known fact these two are soul mates, and their friendship is honestly the best and most pure thing you’ll read in here. In her foreword and his chapter about her, the emotion in every single word is THERE. He speaks fondly of all his cast, but I get the sense, some tears and laughs were shed when he wrote about her. It just reads differently--more emotional. More…honest? Just more. I understand and respect their hesitation to ever be more, given their pure friendship, but since she’s uber successful in everything she’s done, and he too, I’d love to see at one point in their lives, even further down the road, them give it a shot. Be the rom-com - one week of trial dating. They’re amazing friends, but love is friendship on fire, and I bet these two would be so good together. Picture their babies… Imagine the Dramoine fics after a real-life situation lol. Although unsaid by both them, you have to wonder if that’s also their hesitation. Its one thing to put aside friendship and see if you can be more but these two are Hermoine and Draco. The media would be NUTS. the Harry Potter fandom would blow up. They’d get hate for “dating the enemy” or they’d get obsessive love for making Dramoine a real thing. Media wouldn’t separate Draco from Tom and Hermoine from Emma, especially if they were dating, and I think it’s sad the celebrity life could be one more thing keeping them apart.
Anyway, this is Tom’s book, not his romantic life. After all the chapters about HP and the actors involved, I hadn’t realized he had such a “moment” post-HP films. I’m glad he’s better now though, and I hope we continue to see him in great things. If not, he’ll forever be apart of HP, and honestly, I rewatch the films so much, it’s like he’ll never be gone…
