How many restaurants have survived since 1892, for nearly 125 years? Through the Great Depression and two World Wars and race riots and bankruptcies and family squabbles? No, Daley's Restaurant at 809 East 63rd Street in Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood has no relationship with the Daley...family that produced two Chicago mayors. The original owner, John Daley, a young Irish immigrant who came to Chicago to work on the construction of the elevated line, opened a small restaurant on the South Side to accommodate construction workers on the rapid transit and the World Columbian Exposition. The venture prospered and Daley sold his business to two young Greek immigrants, Tom Kyros and Paul Emmanuel, who came to the United States to live the "American Dream." They lost everything when a bank failed in 1932 and spent five years saving money to reopen their restaurant in 1937. Paul retired in 1960 and returned to Greece. Tom retired in 1965, after 47 years in the business. Since then, Daley's has been operated by generations of the Kyros family. They must be doing something right because locals keep coming through the doors through thick and thin, one generation after another. Daley's serves breakfast, lunch and dinner but it's best known for breakfast, which is served at all hours. A selection of sides is enough to fill your stomach...orange juice, hash browns, sausage links, oatmeal, sliced peaches and raisin toast. But then you wouldn't have an opportunity to order one of the seven "club breakfasts" by the number--(1) one farm fresh egg with sides, (2) pancakes with sides, (3) Belgian waffle with sides, (4) French toast with sides, (5) pork chops with sides, (6) steer liver with sides or (7) seven chicken wings or one farm raised catfish. But that's not all. How about two country fresh eggs scrambled with a ribeye steak or T-bone or beef sausage or a 12-ounce chopped steak? Or how about a Denver omelette, sausage and egg breakfast sandwich or a corned beef skillet with hash browns, two extra large eggs, thinly sliced Vienna corned beef, green peppers and onions topped with mozzarella and cheddar cheese? And it all comes with a choice of eight flavors of hot, fresh, home-made bread. Don't overlook lunch and dinner, which includes steaks, chops, salads, sandwiches, seafood, pasta, chicken, soups, pies and cakes. Items to remember are the home-made peach cobbler, Daley's Fiesta burger (1/2 pound of pure ground beef grilled and topped with grilled onions, sliced tomato and lettuce served with fries and cole slaw) and Daley's Patty Melt (1/2 pound of pure ground beef or turkey grilled and served between two slices of American cheese on grilled rye bread with fries and cole slaw). If that isn't enough to make you happy, you don't have a pulse.More
