IMHO, Todd has NEVER been captured singing live any better than this performance. Add to that, the 11 member ensemble performing with him - they are kicking major butt, each and every one.
Most of the guitar is played by Lyle Workman, and he kicks butt, as Todd illustrates at the end of Workman's great solo to end 'Can't Stop Running'.Max Haskett and Bobby Strickland, on trumpet and tenor sax, respectively, are crisp and expressive and add a little dancing and singing. Vince Welnick, of Tubes' fame, adds his solid keyboardws and backing vocs. Larry Tagg, with terrific and lively bass, and Michael Urbano, also great on drums, combine with percussionist Scott Matthews to keep things rolling nicely. Byron Alred also shines on keys/synths.
One of my favorite parts of the ensemble are the trio of Jenni Muldaur, Michele Grey (now Rundgren) , and Shandi Sinnamon on background vocals, interesting dance choreography, and just-plain-looking-HOT in spandex dresses.
Todd does get in a little guitar of his own, some nice work on 'Unloved Children',a nice acapella acoustic 'Love of the Common Man', and a wailing guitar on 'Love in Action'.
Start-to-finish, an interesting set, fun to watch and awesome to listen to.
Rounding out the perfect storm is the production of the video/audio. Fabulous sound (I use the 'club' setting on my amp), a nice variety of camera angles, all well-timed to get the best parts from the key musicians at that moment.
Best Todd vocal??: I'm going with 'Hawking', a song I didn't even care that much for on the album. Just watch and listen all the way to the end of the song and you'll understand.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I have to give this dvd about a 13. Stupendous. It gives me tummy tingles, it's sooo good.
It has a approximate running time of 94 minutes.
The song set:
1.Real Man
2.Unloved Children
3.Parallel lines
4.Can't Stop Running
5.Compassion
6.Secret Society
7.Something to Fall Back on
8.Love of the Common man
9.Can We still be friends
10.Mated
11.The Waiting Game
12.Love in Action
13.Rock Love
14.Hawking
15.The Want of a Nail
16.Hello It's Me (One of my favorite songs by Todd Rundgren, it doesn't sound exactly like the studio version here, but it is close. It is very well performed!!!
17.I Love My Life
Overall, this is a great one, and I highly recommend it. Thanks!!!!
This is really sad because I am a huge Todd Rundgren fan and was looking forward to watching this. The disc prices have really climbed on these ($100+?!) Perhaps due to many of them failing. I really think that the manufacturing company should have issued a fixed version and contacted buyers of the original. Or at least made a statement about it.
