On Thursday, April 25th, a press conference was held at Ufficio by Pan di Bacco inside El Merkado to celebrate International Jazz Day, which will be celebrated at Jazz On The Rocks, El Merkado Koral Center, La Paz, and Todos Santos.
Present were Víctor Hugo Caballero Gutiérrez, General Director of the South Californian Institute of Culture; Rodrigo Esponda, General Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Trust (FITURCA), who will also be promoting the celebration; Councilman Roberto Jiménez, from Movimiento Ciudadano; Mariela Tapiz, from Koral Center; and Jorge “Tito” Rodríguez, musician, composer, and arranger, promoter of Jazz and Artistic Director of International Jazz Day.
“When we started talking with Tito Rodríguez, we said that, of course, we have to support. I was on the Tourism Commission, and all this helps to stimulate the economy, and as long as it is for the benefit of Los Cabos, we should support from wherever we are,” said Rodrigo Esponda.
Regarding International Jazz Day:
In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30th as International Jazz Day to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role in uniting people in all corners of the world. International Jazz Day is chaired and led by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who serves as UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue, and president of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. The Institute is the nonprofit organization in charge of planning, promoting, and producing this annual celebration.
“I always look for gender diversity, we try to have a program of different jazz genres; it’s very good and worth it. The concerts are one hour, a 15-minute break for the next one to come up and set up,” said Tito Rodríguez.
At the press conference, three concerts prior to the celebration date at Jazz On The Rocks were announced:
Jazz On The Rocks Band will perform with a special guest, Andrea Miller (Jazz vocalist from Los Angeles, California, USA) on Thursday, April 25th, at 6:45 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.
Terry Townson (trumpeter from Nashville, USA) will perform on Friday, April 26th, at 6:45 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.
Jazz On The Rocks Band will perform with special guest Karla Kassaneth (Guadalajara Jalisco) on Saturday, April 27th, at 6:45 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.
And then, during the week of concerts celebrating International Jazz Day, the following performances will take place:
