The Nazis came late to Hungary because, until early 1944, Germany and Hungary were allies. But when they did arrive, their orders were to put the “Final Solution” into effect with deliberate speed. Soros, a Jewish lawyer in Budapest, secured fake Christian identities for himself, his wife, and his two sons following the German invasion of Hungary on March 19, 1944. In a narrative reminiscent of the great Primo Levi, Soros recounts his experiences with a beguiling humor, deep humanity, and a wisdom that is humbling.

Superbly translated by Humphrey Tonkin,
Masquerade is a unique account of how one man managed not only to survive but to retain his integrity, compassion, family unity, and humor by “dancing around death.” Like Klemperer’s Diary of the Nazi Years, this very personal, low-key testament of the Holocaust is a gripping depiction of “normal” daily life under the Nazis—told by a man who triumphed by leading an ordinary life under extraordinary and terrifying circumstances.

A remarkable story that all should read.
Mr Soros, the father of George, created false identities for he and his family. His practical approach to life allowed them to survive the Holocaust. This book helped me to look at life in a totally different perspective, and not many books have done that.
The style of writing is straight forward. The tale remarkable.
The book made me want to have lunch with Tivadar.

The book is mainly just a series of events in which (in most cases) the main character succeeded in saving Hungarian Jews from being killed by the Nazis during the last year of the holocaust, and it is a page-turner. Tivadar's seemed to actually enjoy finding ways to get forged documents to save people and was wildly successful. It was heartening to know that many non-Jewish Hungarians were sympathizers and helped them. I also found it very interesting what sorts of documents people needed to have on them, just in case they were stopped in the street, to prove they weren't Jews. And I will never forget one thing Tivadar believed and lived by: that in such terrible times, it is dangerous to let oneself get put in a position of leadership. (He chose to live small and "under the radar," and it saved him and a lot of people that took his advice.) Some Jews let the Nazis use them to represent their community--in a sense, to do the Nazis dirty work of deciding people's fates, thinking that that way they could save themselves and their families, and perhaps they had good motives of wanting to help their fellow Jews in general--but in the end, those expectations were betrayed.

It's WWII, the Nazis have invaded Hungary, and Hungarian Jewish attorney Tivadar Soros has to somehow keep his wife and sons (including future billionaire George) safe. While others cling to bygone comforts, status, rules and norms that will betray them, Soros understands that the former order is gone and he must stay nimble and alert to keep his loved ones away from firing squads and out of the death camps.

The style is simple, straightforward, and intimate. You get the feeling of a man thinking on his feet in the middle of danger--finding solutions and then abruptly having to abort them and find something new. Even better, you hear the morals and principals that Tivadar relied on to get through the danger.

I liked this book a lot. It's a good read and I think of Tivadar's guidelines in my own tough decisions in life.

Hiding his religion may have saved his life and his family's lives. I see Soros more as a traitor.

if you want to know how a JEW took to selling out other JEWS then george soros and his father then this will fill in the some of the blanks. all the truth about george is being filtered out. when you see the original unedited interviews you see george telling how he would go around and point out fellow Jews to the germans so they would be arrested then george would take their stuff and lived in great favor with the germans who were slaughtering his fellow people, oh and georges dad was wealthy and bought them papers stating they were not JEWs. what a traitor. the saddest thing is during some video interviews you can see him laughing, well not just laughing but so happy he cant contain the joy and exuberant excitement that shows on his face. as of today those have all been edited out by google and wikipedia and nearly all other sources. im just sad i didnt get one recorded before they deleted the confessions he made.

If you have heard about all the controversy surrounding George Soros, this is an excellent book to read about the time when he was growing up. We may think that George was a child of privilege and grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth. I won't say he didn't screw over a lot of people but to understand his roots, you need to read his father's biography. It is really a great insight. I rated it 4 stars as it is not a book I would read again but I liked it and it gave me insight I never knew.

A most enjoyable book of memory from a truly remarkable man with a strong love for his family. There is much humor, action, and resilience without too much introspection or socialized morality. This book is about staying invisible enough to survive as a jew in Nazi occupied Hungary without losing your basic humanity to a righteous and easily reciprocated hate. Best non-fiction book I've read in years.

Wars are hard to understand when people can change and be so hostile. Nobody really wins much but there seems to be a winning side and a losing side. I'd have probably committed suicide but it serves as a study to find some alternative instead of giving up and just being a chicken. Who wants to know how you can go on being human when there seems to be such a lack of it?
