SNL stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-anchor Emmys Weekend Update

“We’ve reached the stage in life where we’ll only present awards sitting down,” Fey joked.

The Emmys have brought Tina Fey and Amy Poehler together once again.

The former Saturday Night Live Weekend Update co-hosts joined forces to present the award for Outstanding Live Variety Special to Elton John’s “Live at Dodger Stadium” special at Monday night’s ceremony.

Fey and Poehler joked about each of the nominees in the category, while also poking fun at themselves: “we’ve reached the stage in life where we’ll only present awards sitting down,” Fey said while sitting behind the Update desk.

Fey called Rihanna’s Super Bowl halftime show “the concert so good, it got us all pregnant, and also said of Chris Rock’s “Selective Outrage” special, “Chris could be here tonight but if he wins, we’ll accept on his behalf because we miss getting Emmys.

Meanwhile, Poehler called the Oscars “The only show that’s longer than when they air Titanic with commercials on TBS” and described the Tonys as “Celebrating the best in musicals that were based on movies which will probably be movies again” — which Fey interrupted to say “there’s nothing wrong with that” in reference to the musical remake of Mean Girls that she wrote and co-starred in.

Before announcing John as the winner of the category, Poehler said, “Now, I can’t speak for Elton, but EGOT to be excited about that,” calling out the fact that the “Tiny Dancer” singer would become an EGOT recipient with an Emmy win.

It was the latest in a long series of collaborations between the two comedians. Fey and Poehler overlapped as cast members on SNL in the early aughts, and became the first female duo to sit behind the "Weekend Update" desk for seasons 30 and 31. After they'd each left the cast, they reteamed for the 2008 comedy Baby Mama, and again in 2015’s Sisters. The pair returned to their old stomping ground at NBC in 2015 to cohost an episode of SNL, and both scored Emmys for their work.

Fey and Poehler both appeared in 2004’s Mean Girls, which Fey wrote, though they did not share any screen time together. They also both acted in 2021’s Wine Country, which Poehler directed and featured a slew of SNL alums. Additionally, they each had small roles in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues and Man of the Year.

The musical remake of Mean Girls, written by and costarring Fey, is now playing in theaters.
