The central theme of the series is a simple one: A former government agent's family is murdered by a mysterious group of powerful men and women who have long used their wealth, influence, and even assassination to shape American policies. He vows revenge and sets out to destroy that group in a unique way - by traveling back in time to thwart their past actions. Opposing him are three unlikely comrades: An historian (Lucy Preston played by Abigail Spencer), a soldier (Wyatt Logan played by Matt Lanter) and a computer genius (Rufus Carlin, played by Matthew Barrett.) Their goal; preserve American history and capture - or kill - revenge-seeking Garcia Flynn (played by Goren Visinjic.)
The series features episodes ranging from the French-and-Indian War to Bonnie and Clyde's last days; from the "Red Scare" of the 1950s to Paris in the 1920s. The plots are inventive and - a plus - they ask viewers to consider some fairly important moral, ethical, and philosophical issues. For example: Should the assassination of Abraham Lincoln have been prevented?
(In retrospect, asking American television viewers to consider issues like that might have been a bridge too far. American viewers, after all, tuned in by the millions to watch shows like "Duck Dynasty" and "The Apprentice." Asking them to think about what they were watching was a bold step but, ultimately, might have doomed this show from the start.)
There is a problem with the scripts that revolves around the development of the characters, especially Logan. The writers created the character as a Master Sergeant in the military's elite Delta Force. The problem: He is too young to have risen to that rank, far too emotional, cannot seem to stay on mission, and - owing to the fact that his wife was murdered and the killer never caught - lacks the impulse control that is a common trait among special operations troops. I don't mean to suggest that special forces operators lack emotion: That would be foolish. However, having known many and having served, myself, as an adviser to a Vietnamese infantry regiment I can say with a fair degree of certainty that Wyatt Logan would not have been chosen for the Delta Force, would not have risen to the rank he has in the show, and certainly - given his flawed character traits and his personal history - would not have been chosen for this highly sensitive mission.
There are some other - far less significant - character issues with the Lucy Preston and Rufus Carlin characters but it is the Wyatt Logan character that is the most troubling for me and, I'd wager, for anyone else that served in the military.
That said, I enjoyed this first season because it was based upon a great idea, painted the "villain" as someone who had a justifiable reason for doing what he did, had some interesting secondary characters and subplots, ended the year with a wonderful plot twist, and asked the audience to think about big, important issues.
I just wish the writers had spent a little time figuring out the Wyatt Logan character to make him believable.
My worst bit was actor Matt Lanter, Wyatt, the guy never went on a mission looking shaved…and never carried a period appropriate handgun (Lanter might've been all right for the part but somebody got those two bits very wrong.
Flynn was a confusing character (bad guy but not so bad?), the Rittenhouse storyline confusing.
Timeless will be back for 10 episodes this summer…don't count on a 3rd season even if we do get all 10.
DVD, no Blu ray…and somebody was too lazy to put even one "Behind the scenes" extra on the set, just deleted scenes (subtitled just like the broadcast episodes.…that's a rarity) and a "gag reel" consisting mostly of blown lines and prop difficulties.
Don't worry about the many minor historical, scientific, and tactical mistakes and just have a good time watching it. There's lot of humor in the team's interaction with various historical characters during their missions and the false names they use to conceal their true identities are quite funny. The sinister organization which seems to be secretly controlling the good guys and gals behind the scenes, and the target of the villain(s) seeking revenge on it, adds to the intrigue and suspense. With an endless number of important past events which could be diabolically altered to change American and world history, the intrepid team of Lucy, Wyatt, and Rufus will need numerous TV seasons to resolve it, and let's hope there will be many more future episodes to come.

Highly recommended!!!
5 Sterne ???
LG an alle Zeitreisende ...
