by mikeonmovies | created - 29 Jul 2012 | updated - 29 Jul 2012 | Public

Thomas Newman is one of my favorite composers so i thought i would do this list and try to get ten scores that i love the most in order to make it harder for myself. Really wasn't easy to put one over the other.

1. Road to Perdition (2002)

R | 117 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

72 Metascore

A mob enforcer's son in 1930s Illinois witnesses a murder, forcing him and his father to take to the road, and his father down a path of redemption and revenge.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Tom Hanks, Tyler Hoechlin, Paul Newman

Votes: 283,024 | Gross: $104.45M

The score played a huge factor in me liking this movie as i couldn't believe how emotional invested i was because of what the music does where you can be happy and sad at the same time hearing the music in the background for the movie never mind listening to it on its own. The main theme for this movie i can only describe as genius and the score overall is my favorite Thomas Newman score and one of my favorite scores of all time.

2. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

R | 142 min | Drama

82 Metascore

Over the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion.

Director: Frank Darabont | Stars: Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton, William Sadler

Votes: 2,863,136 | Gross: $28.34M

The score i think highlights perfectly the feeling that not only what the characters are going through but what we should be going through with them. Specifically what comes to mind is a part of the movie where we see Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) making his way to prison as well as others and it has a haunting, dark tone to the score like it's the worst thing that could be happening at that point seeing the prison yard him understanding that this is the rest of his life. Called the "Stoic theme". And of course the classic ending that has hope finally pay off for Andy and Red (Morgan Freeman) brought me close to tears as you are happy for them. That part is basically the main theme/end titles track. Basically it is a great score for a great movie.

3. American Beauty (1999)

R | 122 min | Drama

84 Metascore

A sexually frustrated suburban father has a mid-life crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter's best friend.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley

Votes: 1,204,299 | Gross: $130.10M

There isn't a lot of music in this but this just proves saying less can mean so much more than having the sweeping scores that Thomas Newman has done well but this works for the odd suburban world that we see in the movie. You have the scene where Ricky (Wes Bentley) is showing Jane (Thora Birch) a tape of plastic bag being blown by the wind and you hear mostly a simple piano melody and it basically says all it needs to say about the weirdness but also the beauty of the moment and it makes it one of my favorites as an impressive angle to take a score.

4. The Green Mile (1999)

R | 189 min | Crime, Drama, Fantasy

61 Metascore

A tale set on death row, where gentle giant John Coffey possesses the mysterious power to heal people's ailments. When the lead guard, Paul Edgecombe, recognizes John's gift, he tries to help stave off the condemned man's execution.

Director: Frank Darabont | Stars: Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, David Morse, Bonnie Hunt

Votes: 1,394,793 | Gross: $136.80M

The score is just so moving, going with a lot of the moments that are not the easiest scenes to watch but the score takes you through the heartache and at the end it wraps up the feeling of wonder and magic that the film has without going overboard like it is still within a not so bright reality. A Moment of heartache is especially in the track "Coffey On The Mile".

5. Meet Joe Black (1998)

PG-13 | 178 min | Drama, Fantasy, Romance

43 Metascore

Death, who takes the form of a young man killed in an accident, asks a media mogul to act as his guide to teach him about life on Earth and, in the process, he falls in love with the mogul's daughter.

Director: Martin Brest | Stars: Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Claire Forlani, Jake Weber

Votes: 262,578 | Gross: $44.62M

i think what boosts this movie for me is the score being the best thing about it. It has the magical sweeping score moments as well as the intimate moments with the piano, making the romance and fantasy of everything more compelling. A track called "Whisper of a Thrill" has to be one of the most beautiful tracks I have ever heard i would check that out if you haven't.

6. Finding Nemo (2003)

G | 100 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

90 Metascore

After his son is captured in the Great Barrier Reef and taken to Sydney, a timid clownfish sets out on a journey to bring him home.

Directors: Andrew Stanton, Lee Unkrich | Stars: Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres, Alexander Gould, Willem Dafoe

Votes: 1,105,013 | Gross: $380.84M

The score had left me torn apart emotionally as i couldn't believe it was making me feel sorry for animated fish similar to how i felt about the Lion King but Finding Nemo hit on a very low key level where again the simplicity of certain moments with the piano just hit hard to what was happening so it immediately became one of my favorite Thomas Newman scores.

7. Revolutionary Road (2008)

R | 119 min | Drama, Romance

69 Metascore

A young couple living in a Connecticut suburb during the mid-1950s struggle to come to terms with their personal problems while trying to raise their two children.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Christopher Fitzgerald, Jonathan Roumie

Votes: 223,764 | Gross: $22.91M

The score perfectly matches and boosts a great movie in showing the confusion and sadness that the couple played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are going through but it is done in such a rhythmic and interesting way that i end up enjoying it at the same time. So when it comes up i can't help but admire how great and complicated it is.

8. Angels in America (2003)

TV-MA | 352 min | Drama, Fantasy, Romance

Several disparate but connected individuals go through the AIDS crisis in the mid-1980s.

Stars: Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, Mary-Louise Parker

Votes: 29,601

After i watched Band of Brothers i started paying attention to scores in TV series as i really loved that score and it is the same for the score in Angels in America with what i think is pure genius. Setting the tone every episode for big expectations for what is to come from the main title which automatically brings me in to looking forward to what happens. Also a great track that again a theme for Newman insights hope is "The Great Work Begins".

9. WALL·E (2008)

G | 98 min | Animation, Adventure, Family

95 Metascore

In the distant future, a small waste-collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind.

Director: Andrew Stanton | Stars: Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, Jeff Garlin, Fred Willard

Votes: 1,190,416 | Gross: $223.81M

The sense of intrigue and curiosity that seems to be part of a theme for WALL.E is perfectly done i think from the bouncy theme it has on earth but also the wonder in space as we see him with EVE. The perfect track i think is called "Define Dancing"

10. A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)

PG | 108 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family

62 Metascore

When a massive fire kills their parents, three children are delivered to the custody of cousin and stage actor Count Olaf, who is secretly plotting to steal their parents' vast fortune.

Director: Brad Silberling | Stars: Jim Carrey, Jude Law, Meryl Streep, Liam Aiken

Votes: 220,068 | Gross: $118.63M

I liked its use of just a lot of instruments in percussion, in strings and electronic instruments that are a clever spin on bringing all these different sounds together that when listening to the track "Drive Away" i was surprised in how many sounds were being used in i think the best way possible it had to go on my Top 10 Thomas Newman scores.
