The stars are for the tour. Dermott was an engaging delight for all ages, bringing the past to life with little to go on (we only had access to the Palace and not the House). A natural storyteller with an infectious passion for history and the importance of personal research. My 9 and 12 year old were gripped and we have come away with a list of related locations to visit in order to keep their interest in history going.

The other reviews tell the slightly sad truth about the underwhelming Christmas tour, but Dermott transformed our rather soggy day with an Elizabethan tour-de-force!

I was interested to visit the Mill Green Museum and was impressed.

There is a very good display about the musicians who were from the local area and places they performed in Hatfield. I was surprised to discover one of the Rolling Stones was from Hatfield!

There are other things to see in the mill including the mill itself with its waterwheel. There's also a decent gift shop where you can buy locally milled flour from the mill.

The only disappointment for me was that I wanted to pay to visit by cash and they did not have any money to enable me to do this.

Found one or two interesting shops to explore - great bookshop and places to eat.
The restaurants/cafes are generally chain groups - there used to be a nicer range of food places

The River Lea originates near Luton and meanders to Hertford through places like Hatfield.

At Hertford it meets the rivers Mimram, Rib and Beane where the Lea becomes much wider and from Hertford it is navigable all the way to East London and the River Thames.

There are plenty of places to walk along beside the river and it is very pleasant.

Excellent lecture, well presented, and well attended. The staff were very helpful, and the service they gave was excellent. A most enjoyable evening.

The walk from Nast Hyde to Smallford is part of the Alban Way from Hatfield to St Albans. It is very picturesque with a variety of different things to see including the former railway station at Nast Hyde which has been beautifully restored. From there it's into the countryside, the former trackbed has created a lovely avenue. It's about a mile from Nast Hyde to Smallford station.

Depending on your energy levels you may want to stop here however I would suggest continuing your walk to St Albans.

There are regular buses from St Albans to Hatfield to get you back to your starting point.

Visited Hatfield Swim Centre for a kids party. The venue is excellent but it has to be said the childrens enjoyment was somewhat curtailed by the overzealous and fanatical life guards to whom every single thing seemed to contravene a health & safety regulation. The party included some parents being present in the pool to supervise and yet even then they seemed in a constant panic, shouting and whistling. Safety is obviously the top priority at a venue like this but try and tone it down just a little…

My partner and I took our Nieces for the half term woodland activities. It was fun and interesting. There is a woodland workshop where they could make bird feeders and bug hotels. Then there was a trailer ride which they loved, and Dermot was an amazing guide, John was a great driver. Had a really lovely time as always. The seeded card tickets are a beautiful touch!
