      Critics Consensus

There's Something About Mary proves that unrelentingly, unabashedly puerile humor doesn't necessarily come at the expense of a film's heart.

Maria D Watched this movie when I was fully pregnant. Needless to say I thought I was going to give birth in the theatre with laughing so hard. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review Alex F Thought it was hilarous as a kid/teenager. Still very funny but it lacks replay-ability but thats partly because the scenes are so memorable. As far as romcoms go I think this kind of defines the genra for me. The only issue I have is that the movie is filled with laughs but the actual storyline and acting itself is devoid of real emotion and feeling. In retrospect though maybe this is all for the best as I believe "Theres something about Mary was meant to be light hearted and not really supposed to leave the audience through an emotional rollercoaster. I think the cast and crew set out to accomplish something and they hit it out of the park. A very memorable, funny, and light hearted romantic comedy. Possibly the gold standard for such an undertaking. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/25/24 Full Review Chuck M Very funny even though it can get a little stupid at times Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/25/24 Full Review GreatWhite W This movie had a handful of scenes which at the time had a shock value, but have staled as the years have progressed. A mediocre cast starlit by Cameron Diaz and Brett Favre drudged its way through a "Guy meets girl. Guy gets girl. Guy loses girl. Girl tries to get girl again. Somehow against all odds guy DOES get girl" premise. Stiller plays the same slap stick, hard lucked role he's famous for now. Frankly it doesn't hold up. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review Angela P Absolutely love this movie. Has me crying with laughter even after the 15th time watching it. Brilliant! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/31/23 Full Review Jacob G Absolutely hilarious I cannot believe nobody told me about this sooner. Hidden gem for sure!! Manohla Dargis L.A. Weekly If the Farrellys don't know yet how to arrange a group of actors in a shot, they do know how to exploit [their cast] to the fullest, and how to push a joke to its breaking point; their taste is as bad as their timing is exquisite. Jan 5, 2023 Full Review Michael O'Sullivan Washington Post If the sight of a large chunk of a man's private parts caught in the teeth of a zipper is funny -- and I'm not saying it isn't -- then have I got a movie for you. Feb 3, 2009 Full Review Stephen Hunter Washington Post This one is dumbest. And funniest, as if that matters even a little bit!
