gross, stupid, not funny

This movie is raunchy, disgusting, and dumb. I don't understand what people think is funny about it. I didn't laugh once. I don't find people being injured or humiliated humorous. I don't find jokes about body parts, poop, or farts humorous. It could have been funny that all these different guys were all "in love" with one woman, but it wasn't. There could have been humor in the movie, but there wasn't.

So many people like this movie that I realize I may just be atypical, but I don't find any of the stuff in this movie funny or even entertaining. I wish I could scrub it from my mind or turn back time and unwatch it. It was truly awful, in my opinion. Not my cup of tea at all.

When the Farrelly Brothers finally figured everything out

Something About Mary was a Farrelly Brothers romantic comedy featuring Mary (Cameron Diaz) and Ted (Ben Stiller). He fell in love with her in high school and then tried to find her when he became an adult. The problem is he hires a private detective Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to find her and he falls in love with her as well creating a love triangle.

The movie marks when the Farrelly Brothers started calming down and didn’t go for as much slap stick and craziness. There are some over the top moments however which they’re known for. One of the most famous from the movie was when Ted zips up his pants too quickly and gets his thing caught in it. Mary’s dad then shows it off to everyone that comes over from his wife, to a policeman to a fireman. Another time Pat drugs a dog of Mary’s friend and it almost dies on him. He uses some wires from a lamp to revive it, but not before it bursts into flames which he has to put out. Most of the movie is much more subdued and there's a lot of romance as well.

It still stands out as one of the best films the brothers put out.

Let me be honest. I made it through the first 15 minutes and had to stop. It's clearly meant to be a comedy. But it's so stupid, and vulgar, and violent, that whatever actual comedic bits are lost amidst the grossness.

Comedy and romance go together quite nicely, when well done, nuanced, and relatable. NOTHING in this movie (at least the first couple of acts) is relatable. It's slapstick but not clever. It's unlikely to the point of simply unbelievable.

Let's start with Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller, the unlikely pair of high schoolers who go to the prom. Cameron Diaz, who was 27 in 1998 when this movie was made. Ben Stiller who was 34. They don't even look like high school students; they come across as retarded adults. I mean, yeah, Diaz was very pretty (and still is). Stiller was... well... a middle aged guy with a wig and fake braces. NO ONE would be fooled. This awful casting only makes sense in that we fast forward a few years to watch him try to find her again or some such.

Learn from Buffy, and My So-Called Life, and other attempts at high school portrayal, in which they use 19-year-olds who at least look and sound close to high schoolers. (Actually Claire Danes was 16 at the time she was playing a 15-year-old in My So-Called Life, so kudos to them!) Watching grownups trying to be clumsy adolescents just killed the fun for me.

I saw this movie when it was first released. I still remember having to pick myself off the floor from laughing so hard. There so much going on it was a pleasure to get it on DVD. I find myself rewinding the movie to hear what was said. I tend to laugh very loudly when watching this film.

The basic plot of boy falls for a beautiful girl in high school, only to loose her to a very uncomfortable zipper issue. Hires a scumbag PI who, like many other men, turn into stalkers. The jokes are many, the acting is great, as is the movie.

From the zipper to Brett Fav re, to fake pizza delivery man, this movie delivered ! There is something about Mary !

This is basically a story about a boy and a girl and the trials they have after they met. Basically its a reverse forrest gump movie. The guy has horrible luck, ends up with the girl, with a healthy dose of schadenfreude you will love this movie.
For all the super sensitive folks who are all chanting cancel culture slogans about the tone and subjects of this type of humor, you should just get a life and realize that you belong with the exceptional people home in the movie. Get over it.

The ending just barely redeemed the drudging pain enacted on our psyche. However, I adore Jonathan Richman and that was a wonderful surprise! My name is also Mary so I just pretended he was singing to me to get through.

This is a cute and funny movie. I can't imagine it being made today, given how sensitive people are to so many topics. (animal mistreatement jokes, retard jokes, handicapped jokes, gay criminality jokes, bisexual jokes, etc). So be warned, this movie is from the pre-politically correct censorship and pre-woke 1990's era . But if you aren't outraged you might find yourself laughing a lot.
