In the end, the real heartbreak was the fact I chose to spend my night watching this 🙁
What a rotten, hateful movie this is. Misogynistic, homophobic, racist, it checks every box. What were the Farrelly Brothers trying time do here? Even when their movies don’t work, they’re still generally kind. This movie is malicious. The original Heartbreak Kid was a little dark, but man, this movie is just plain mean. I hated this.
Seriously underrated. The original offered a much-needed corrective to Benjamin Braddock. Since then, that entitled, half-checked man-child has given rise to fully spoiled, completely unchecked man-children, and the Farrelly's version exaggerates to skewer Braddock's progeny. The directors and Stiller did this before with There's Something About Mary, but this goes even darker, removing Mary's semi-cop-out ending in favor of suggesting a never-ending cycle of misogyny and self-justification spewed by the sort of scrawny fool who loves to call himself a Nice Guy whenever he gets rejected. Brutal, brutal stuff.
When I was 28, I lived in Portland, Oregon for a year, working on a U.S. Senate campaign. I didn't know anyone in town, so I ended up rooming with a guy who worked on the Obama campaign. Offensive, gross and ruining all that is original and humanistic in the 1972. The Farrelly’s turn a classic into a “comedy” with gay stereotypes, Mexican stereotypes and unfair exploration of Malin Akerman.
Steadfastly underappreciated, Peter and Bobby Farrelly's "The Heartbreak Kid" is a surprisingly appealing comedy of romantic errors. Starring Ben Stiller as an everyman whose life is upended by an ill-thought-out marriage, the film weaves light raunch and satisfying romance for a spirited and enjoyable piece of work.
Revolving around Stiller's sporting goods mini-magnate, "The Heartbreak Kid" follows as its protagonist becomes entangled with and, subsequently, married to a woman who quickly impacts his life. Just as quickly, she becomes intolerable and leaves Stiller's lead to contemplate different and more apt romantic pairings.
