Editorial Reviews
When it comes to retro-action it's hard to top The Wedding Singer the 1980s-set film in which Adam Sandler sang in a wedding band and looked for his own true love. The soundtrack was wall-to-wall 80s hits and the movie played up visual references to that decade. Now we have the stage version and it's even more retro than the movie except this time around the songs are originals written by Chad Beguelin and Matthew Sklar. ("Somebody Kill Me" and "Grow Old With You" actually are the ones originals from the film.) The duo has delivered a silly-but-fun pop score that often refers to 80s musical styles without hitting you over head with them&mdash-you'll hear nods to early Madonna and Prince and a whole lot of cheesy synth lines. Think of it as the 80s answer to Hairspray.Opener "It's Your Wedding Day" and "Someday" for instance will stick in your head for days on end. Singing comedian Stephen Lynch proves to be an endearing leading man while silver-throated Laura Benanti takes up the Drew Barrymore part. But it's belter Felicia Finley who steals the show with her two Pat Benatar&ndashish numbers "A Note from Linda" and "Let Me Come Home."

Now back to the soundtrack itself. It has some really great musical moments, from the teriffic opening number (It's Your Wedding Day) to the truly inspirational Act One Finale (Saturday Night in the City). I don't think there is one song on this CD that I don't like. But be warned, this CD will only make you smile if you have fond memories of 80's music. If you don't like it, then I really don't reccommend buying this CD. Since I LOVE the 80's this CD is perfect for me.

However, I was very surprised. And the music outdoes the songs that originally appeared in the film.
Great combination of songs for each character, great duets, great tunes and lyrics. Just plain fun.
Matthew Sklar has done a great job of recreating an 80s sound for this production, and the two main leads (Stephen Lynch and Laura Benanti) do a fantastic job.

Just great great stuff. If you like the 80s, if you like fun/upbeat/carefree music, you'll definitely like this!
If you have fond memories of the 80's because you were in high school, college, or even in your 20's or 30's.... you MUST see the musical on Broadway. My best friend and I laughed our "you know what's" off! They have stuck pretty close to the original movie; about as much as they could.
The original music and lyrics that have been written for the musical, and that are on the Soundtrack are GREAT! They are sweet, fun, hysterical, and just make you want to tap your feet, move your head, and sing along! The lyrics make SO many referrences to some great 80's memories. Whenever I am having a bad day, I can put on the soundtrack to "The Wedding Singer" and have a smile in my face in a matter of seconds!
Music is okay, but if you are doing this in a High School, you will probably need to edit this performance, especially if you are performing it for a middle school group. Mentions jello shots, references to drinking occur frequently, calling girls skanks, the cuss-filled lament song after the breakup, etc... For an adult audience the lyrics are the most amusing part, but musically it is not challenging... or for that matter, interesting. The student who was trying out for the lead part learned every main tune by ear in a day or 2.
Funny for those who lived through the 80's big hair decade with outrageous fashion and ...well, as I like to say, nothing good came out of the 80's except the movie, "Predator".
So if you are performing this, get the disc, it helps. If not... watch the Adam Sandler Drew Barimore film instead.
