Working as a theatre director I am in constant want of an interesting story that is well written and has definitive parts for all ages and progressrd onward in their character development. A fellow thespian recommended this play and it has blown my mind away and I am awaiting to offer this play for our next season.
It covers three generations of a family as old age grows upon this family in all directions. Humor, sadness and tragedy is evident in the love that grandmother expresses as senility settles in this beloved family character. Highly recommended.

Somewhere on Earth this play runs every day — not in theaters, but in homes. Not with trained actors, but with families that have no script. The price of admission is very high.

A former attorney now in her eighties maintains a small art gallery. There’s little in it and it attracts few patrons. Primarily it is a vacant space, its walls securing a woman slipping into dementia.

Her three family members muddle along. They smile at her small oddities. Sometimes they are angry. Often they shout in frustration though mainly because the aging woman’s hearing began fading before her faculties did. Mainly the family is tense but helpful.

The woman’s grandson, a speechwriter for a local EPA official, is the most steadfast, open and sympathetic. Although each lucid character is touched by shortcomings, none are “bad” people. They are just victims of chemistry, like the slow melting of Faraday’s candle until the heat and light of it is gone. It is the same fate for the old woman. As for the fatigued family members, it is hard to escape the implication they have been wishing with guilt for relief.

After finishing the script, unlikely I would go to see it performed.

One of the most over-rated plays in the 90's

A "Night Mother" for the 90's, this story of an upper west side jewish family dealing with the grandmother's alzheimer's should have been made into a "Movie of the Week" instead of a play. While I admit I'm not a fan of Lonergan's work, I simply fail to understand why this play has been so favorably reviewed by so many.
