The Warning is a Mexican rock band from Monterrey, Nuevo León, formed in 2013 by the Villarreal sisters.[1] Daniela (guitar, lead vocals), Paulina (drums, lead vocals, piano), and Alejandra (bass guitar, piano, backing vocals) first gained attention for their July 2014 cover of Metallica's "Enter Sandman" on their YouTube page,[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] which has reached over 23.3 million views as of March 2022.[8]

Drummer Paulina Villarreal Vélez was interviewed by Tom Tom Magazine a year before The Warning's cover of "Enter Sandman" became popular.[9] Metallica lead guitarist Kirk Hammett praised Pau's performance on the song, stating "The drummer kicks maximum ass!"[5][10]

In 2015, The Warning raised enough money on GoFundMe to release an EP of six original songs, titled Escape the Mind.[11] During production of Escape the Mind, the band met record producer Jake Carmona, who would go on to mix the EP, and work alongside them writing and recording for The Warning on subsequent albums XXI Century Blood and Queen of the Murder Scene.[12]

The popularity of The Warning's cover of "Enter Sandman" led to a guest appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on April 24, 2015.[3][13] In addition to their GoFundMe page, they received funding from The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Target in order to attend a 5-week long summer program at the Berklee College of Music.

The video game Rock Band was a major influence in the trio's formation of the band,[14] and two of their original songs are featured in the fourth game;[14] a song from their EP, "Free Falling", is featured in the video game Rock Band 4,[15] and "Survive", a song from their debut full-length album, XXI Century Blood, was released as free downloadable content as a part of the "Rivals" expansion in 2016.[16][17]

They presented two TEDx Talks at the University of Nevada, first in January 2016 (after Berklee)[18] and then in January 2017 (after recording their debut album),[19] telling the story of their journey as a band of sisters in between songs.

The Warning began recording XXI Century Blood in 2016 at Sonic Ranch, and released it in 2017.[3] In that same year, they were invited to open for legendary rock bands Aerosmith, Def Leppard, and Alice Cooper at the Mother of All Rock Festival at the Forum Arena Monterrey.[20] In April 2018, they opened for The Killers at Arena Monterrey.[21]

The group announced in 2018 that they would be heading to Sphere Studios in Los Angeles to record their second studio album but ultimately all of the album tracks were recorded at SOGA Studios in Jiutepec, México.[citation needed] The album, titled Queen of the Murder Scene, was released on November 25, 2018. It achieved high showings in the iTunes and Amazon rock music charts for several weeks after release, despite being independent. Queen of the Murder Scene is a concept album; it tells the story of a woman who slips into psychosis due to unrequited love.[22]

The band's first song in Spanish, the single "Narcisista", debuted live and was released on June 14, 2019.[23]

The group announced on December 18, 2019, via their official YouTube channel, that they would be conducting their first large scale tour of North America in 2020. The tour was supposed to comprise 23 concert dates, commence on March 14, 2020, in México, make stops throughout the United States and Canada and finish in México on May 2, 2020.[24] But apart from the March 14 show, the rest of the tour had to be indefinitely postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[25]

Lava Records deal[edit]

On August 9, 2020, the band announced through their Patreon community that they had signed a 5 album record deal with American-based label Lava Records after 7 months of negotiation.

Work on their third studio album, produced by David Bendeth, began in September 2020.[26]

The first single from the album, entitled "Choke," was released on May 21, 2021. On the day of release it reached the Top 50 of the main (all genre) iTunes charts in Ireland and México and the Top 30 of the iTunes Rock Charts in US, UK, Ireland and Peru. The follow up single "Evolve" was released on July 23, 2021, and saw similar positive showings in the iTunes Rock Charts.

The band performed a new cover of "Enter Sandman" with Alessia Cara for The Metallica Blacklist album, a compilation of covers of songs from The Black Album to commemorate the album's 30th anniversary.[27] The cover quickly amassed over 1 million streams on Spotify within the first 2 weeks of release and reached #12 on the iTunes rock chart. Increased media attention saw articles in Classic Rock and Rolling Stone. The Warning's 2021 cover naturally prompted media comparisons with their earlier 2014 version[28] and the band received positive recognition for their significant progression in the previous 7 years.[28]

An EP, Mayday, comprising effectively the first half of the band's third studio album, was released on October 8, 2021. Their third album, Error, will be released on June 24, 2022.
