Boynton becomes fascinated with the Shaker religion and sees connections to his own spiritualism in it. Egeria becomes ill and after she recovers Boynton attempts to prove her powers as a medium to the Shakers but fails. He believes Egeria has lost her power while recovering from her illness. Meanwhile Ford has sought Egeria out and tries to convince Boynton that spiritualism is a fake. Ill himself now, Boynton sees his folly, is sorry he has put Egeria through so much, and then dies. Ford and Egeria marry.
Boynton is a sad character, not only because he is convinced for so long that what he is doing is so important, but for what he's forced Egeria to endure as well. Unfortunately, Howells doesn't explore the consequences of this father-daughter relationship beyond what is obvious on the surface. Howells does a good job developing his characters, but what is difficult for the modern reader to deal with seriously is the subject matter. Following the publication of this novel, Howells would enter into his most mature period as a writer.
