Though Tom Hanks is heartbroken by the move, his new World War II movie, Greyhound, skipped the theatrical release and is now available to stream on Apple TV+.

Greyhound was originally slated to open in theaters by Sony Pictures on March 22, 2020, but was delayed due to the coronavirus. It was eventually sold to Apple for distribution for $70 million. In addition to starring in the film, Hanks adapted the screenplay himself from the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C. S. Forester. It’s the first film the two-time Oscar-winner has written in nearly a decade (since 2011’s Larry Crowne), so it’s no wonder he’s disappointed by the straight-to-streaming release. “I don’t mean to make angry my Apple overlords, but there is a difference in picture and sound quality,” Hanks said in a recent interview with The Guardian.

The idea of Tom Hanks, a national treasure, being heartbroken is a pretty major bummer. If Tom Hanks is sad, I’m sad! The least we can do is stream his movie on Apple TV Plus, even if the picture and quality don’t live up to the big screen experience. Directed by Aaron Schneider, Greyhound tells the story of a fiction US Navy Commander (Hanks) leading his very first WWII mission, just a few months after the U.S. entered the war in 1942.
