Product Description
Based on the bestselling novel, the film follows a priest and his struggle between his calling and his carnal lusts.
Amazon.com
The second most-watched miniseries (after Roots) of all time, The Thorn Birds was originally broadcast in 1983 and captivated viewers with its story of a lifelong conflict between the spirit and the flesh. Adapted from the bestselling novel by Colleen McCullough, the production stars Richard Chamberlain as a Catholic priest named Ralph de Bricassart, whose life in Australia between 1920 and 1962 is one long torment as he pines for his lover, Meggie Cleary (Rachel Ward), while seeking advancement in his clergyman career. The passion and the guilt make for compelling drama, but a stellar cast of supporting players adds muscle to the proceedings: Barbara Stanwyck (who won an Emmy for her work as Meggie's tough aunt), Jean Simmons, Richard Kiley, Christopher Plummer, Bryan Brown, and Mare Winningham. Chamberlain, who was something of the king of the miniseries form at the time, is very good in the lead, as is the often-underrated Ward. Their affair is indeed irresistible to watch, which proves to be true, too, of the story's thick weave of church politics, forbidden desire, social change over decades, and family secrets. --Tom Keogh

Now as for the show itself its breathtaking. You can't help but to fall in love with the story. Richard Chamberlain stars as a priest forced to make a choice between his feelings and his ambitions in this sweeping adaptation of Colleen McCullough's novel. Set in the early 1900s on a sheep station in the Australian outback, the 1983 miniseries follows members of the Cleary family, whose move to the sheep station leads to a pivotal relationship between young Meggie Cleary and Father Ralph. When the attraction between Meggie and Father Ralph becomes obvious, Meggie's wealthy aunt forces Father Ralph to choose between Meggie and his ambition to rise within the Catholic Church.
I hope in the future Warner Brothers releases a restoration on 4k or blu-ray. I am also sure that we will get a remake. A sequel was made but it was a critical and ratings failure. This was called "The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years. Richard Chamberlain reprised his award-winning role. Sadly he is about the only person to return.
The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years, which fills in a critical period left out of The Thorn Birds. Sadly he is about the only person to return.
As much as I love this mini-series I would welcome a remake. This time around they can use the entire book.
This would be a great gift for someone who adores "Love Stories"
