- Edited 3 months ago"Papa was a rolling stone" is unreal here, the bass is beyond deep (but not bloated).
Thank you Maarten and thank you Speakers Corner! referencing All Directions (LP, Album) G962L
My copy is identical to this one down to the runout and lettering style on the label, but the artist name and song titles are in silver and not black as shown in one of the above photos. Does anyone else have this variant?- Paul Warren, an old family friend from Detroit, played the "blues" guitar track that answers the Wah Wah Watson guitar track. He was only 15 years old. You can hear the blues track start up right after the vocals start. James Jamerson may have done bass on some of the songs but I heard he passed on "Papa" because he just couldn't wrap his head around what Whitfield wanted.

Temptations 1971:
Dennis Edwards, tenor; Eddie Kendricks, tenor/falsetto; Paul Williams, tenor/baritone; Melvin Franklin, bass; and Otis Williams, tenor/baritone- Fantastic album. Funk/soul. Long version of Papa was a rolling stone is just a classic. Great to add to collection.
- As all Speakers Corner stuff this is a great quality pressing. Everything sounds like they playing live in your living room. Dead quiet copy, audiophile quality!
- Edited 5 months agoAlbum Revolution #7:
By the time "All Directions" was released, it seemed like no matter who was in "The Temptations", as long as they had "Norman Whitfield" in the drivers seat, the group could do no wrong!!!! Still in the height of the "Psychedelic Soul" era, this album just rode so high!!! Even without "Eddie Kendricks" and "Paul Williams", it seems like it was never going to be grounded!!!!
It's starts off with "Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On", with "Funk" being the pure vocal point....
"Run Charlie Run" was a very quirky kind of song, but had a very strong message on how Black folks were (and in some cases are) viewed....
There are 3 Crown Jewels on this album....
The obvious one is "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone"....I remember ever since I was a kid, I always heard the 7 minute version and wanted to see and hear the 45 version, only to find out that was the 45 version!!!! On here it is a staggering 12 minutes long!!!! My wife almost fainted when she found out saying, "Only YOU would find a longer version!!!!"...
The second is "I Ain't Got Nothin''...I usually don't go too crazy about lyrics more than the music, but on this Bad Boy right here, ("Every road has a way and every dog has his day...Everybody has something but me") Wow!!!!
The last Crown Jewel is "Mother Nature"....My mother used to say that to her this sounded like an Old Time Spiritual....I guess I don't see it like that, because the music on there was jaw dropping!!!!
Unfortunately there is filler, they should never do "Isaac Hayes"!!! ("Do Your Thing")....
This continued to keep "The Temps" at their creative best....They would soon begin to start sliding off a bit, but at least right here, it seemed like they just could not be stopped!!!!
PS: Ok "hellomudda", I will give "Do Your Thing" another shot....... - Hi, I have this record with number CSJ-1250 or CSJ I250, cover and record are different. Outside of the tracks, everything is in Chinese. I do not get the label TEMPTATON in discogs. Therefore I cannot make a new release
