为什么太阳、月亮、地球在英语中不是专有名词？

因为并不是专有名词才表示特指。

定冠词the也可以起到类似的功能。

the的功能中有一项是cultural use，意思是说：说英语的人，在上下文并不明确的情况下，只要某个词前面加了the，那么十有八九是专指某个特定的东西或者概念。

比如sun在天文上指恒星，但如果和the组合，且上文并未明确提到过某个sun，则十有八九是指我们头顶的“太阳”。

moon类似，不加the也可以表示某个行星卫星，加了the同时上下文也不牵涉到其他卫星行星，那就是指夜晚的月亮。

日月地球之外的例子，比如：I will take the bus.（没有上下文指出是什么bus的时候，bus前面加the特指“公交”这种出行方式，而不是具体某一辆公交或者某个公交线路），也算是cultural use。

不过cultural use本身的确是一个比较迷的用法……将之称为“固定搭配”是一点都不为过，因为the的cultural use有着很强的“主题特色”。

也就是说，某一类主题下的单词，非特指的情况下都喜欢加the……有些则习惯不加……

1. 比如上面地月日就是一组喜欢加the的词汇。Earth、moon、sun不论是不是大写，只要加了the基本就是特指“地月日”。但是太阳系的其他行星，就都挂专有名词了。
2. 比如，同样都是play的对象，乐器基本都是the XXX，但球类运动就是不加the……
3. 比如，人体部位喜欢加the（比如the heart），但人体病症什么的就不怎么喜欢加the（比如heart attack）……
4. 国家全称及全称简称前面喜欢加the（比如the United States of America; the USA），但单词名称则不喜欢加the（比如America）

总之，以上这些加了the的都算是the的cultural use。

咱们来看看The Chicago Manual of Style（英文刊常用的manual）关于earth的说法（当用于非技术性文本，一般加the并小写，习语也是小写。当用于技术文本并用在行星的语境中时，可以大写并去掉the）：

In nontechnical contexts, the word earth, in the sense of our planet, is usually
lowercased when preceded by the or in such idioms as “down to earth” or “move
heaven and earth.” When used as the proper name of our planet, especially in
context with other planets, it is capitalized and the is usually omitted.

如下是例子：

Some still believe the earth is flat.
The gender accorded to the moon, the sun, and the earth varies in different
mythologies.
Where on earth have you been?
The astronauts have returned successfully to Earth.
Does Mars, like Earth, have an atmosphere?

关于sun和moon，是咋用呢（非技术类文本中多小写，当moon表示卫星时是小写~）：

The words sun and moon are usually lowercased in nontechnical contexts and
always lowercased in the plural.

下面是例子（如下第一个例子是不是和最开始说的有点冲突昂？可能是非技术类文本/规则也不一定那么死板吧）：

The moon circles the earth, as the earth circles the sun.
Some planets have several moons.

接着是一段说明（天文学等领域多大写这些词来做专有名词用~）：

Some publications in the fields of astronomy and related sciences, however,
routinely capitalize these words when used as proper nouns.
