Trailer for The Sisters Brothers, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix, Rutger Hauer, John C. Reilly and Carol Kane.
Based on Patrick Dewitt's acclaimed novel, The Sisters Brothers follows two brothers -- Eli and Charlie Sisters -- who are hired to kill a prospector who has stolen from their boss. The story, a genre-hybrid with comedic elements, takes place in 1851 Oregon.
John C. Reilly knew he was going to be part of this adaptation for some time. The actor optioned the rights to the book back in 2011.
I can't say how happy I am to see the return of the Western genre, especially with the recent trend of genre mixing. Slow West had a dark, somewhat humorous take on the genre, and now we have this first trailer for The Sisters Brothers.
It's immediately clear that Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly make a great team. Even before visuals present themselves on the screen -- unless you consider the black opening as visuals -- the dialogue between the two is on point. While these two could probably carry the film on their own, the addition of Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed -- who you may remember co-starred in Nightcrawler -- bring their own sort of buddy-team formula.
And, of course, these two er, buddy sets are forced to square off. Love it.
