Right out of the gate with shows like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, Netflix established itself as the home of amazing original drama series. And every year, the streaming service releases a new slate of content, including plenty of dramas that are top-notch, some even award-winning. The list on Netflix is diverse, ranging from period dramas to romantic shows, psychological thrillers, and more. Of late, Netflix has also been picking up foreign-language dramas, offering them in North America with dubbing or subtitles.

But when it comes to English-language dramas, which are the best-rated new ones from 2020? Here's a ranking, according to the review aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes.

Grand Army – 71%

This teen drama, loosely based on Katie Cappiello's Slut: The Play, is about five high school kids in Brooklyn, New York navigating their lives, including all of the typical things that kids deal with as they come of age.

The name is based on the fictional high school, Grand Army, where each student is focused on their own path, from the dance team to basketball, and swimming. Each is also dealing with their own issues, from the closeted gay Indian American to the Chinese American who was adopted by a wealthy Jewish couple as a baby.

Outer Banks – 71%

Another teen drama, and considered to be one of Netflix's best in the genre, Outer Banks is a mystery that follows teenagers living in an area of North Carolina known as the Outer Banks., There, they band together to try and find out what happened to their leader John B's father, who went missing. As they pursue their investigation, however, they come upon a legendary treasure.

The kids in this action-adventure, known as "Pogues" must battle the rival "Kooks" and other temptations if they want to be able to achieve their ultimate goals.

Sweet Magnolias – 78%

Jamie Lynn Spears is among those who star in this romantic drama that's based on the Sheryl Woods novel of the same name about a group of friends in South Carolina who lean on one another as they deal with life's challenges.

Sweet Magnolias debuted in May with 10 episodes and was quickly renewed for a second season.

Blood & Water – 80%

Blood & Water

Hailing from South Africa, this family drama is one of many international dramas fans can watch on Netflix. It centers on a high school-aged young woman named Puleng who believes that a girl she comes across at a party might be the sister who was kidnapped by a human trafficking network just after she was born.

Puleng then sets out to try and solve the case and figure out if the girl is, in fact, her long-lost sibling. By digging deeper, however, she uncovers even more secrets about her family's past.

The Stranger – 83%

The Stranger

Based on a Harlan Coben novel, a man named Adam is approached by a strange woman who reveals some damaging information about his wife. When Adam's wife disappears, and the strange woman continues to feed him information, he begins to question everything about his life.

Dubbed a miniseries, it's unclear if there are plans for a second season of this eight-part British mystery thriller. Nonetheless, it was well-received.

The Haunting of Bly Manor – 87%

The Haunting of Hill House was a huge success with horror movie fans so it comes as no surprise that its follow-up, The Haunting of Bly Manor, would perform just as well. Loosely based on stories by Henry James, a woman gets more than she bargained for when taking a job looking after the niece and nephew of a wealthy man living in an opulent manor.

With ghosts, creepy dolls, terror, spooks, and scares, it's a must-watch for fans of this anthology series.

Queen Sono – 91%

This South African crime drama hasn't gotten as much attention as the others that made the top 10 but it ranks right up there with them. The title character is a secret agent who works to take down criminals and solve cases while also dealing with turmoil in her own personal life.

While Queen Sono was well-reviewed and had initially been renewed for a second season, production delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic led Netflix to reportedly cancel the show. Thus, while it won't be returning, this series and its six-episode first season ranks among the best Netflix released in the drama genre for 2020.

Homemade – 94%

While the series is an Italian-Chilean anthology production, it is offered in English as its original language. A unique offering from Netflix in the category, episodes are made up of various short stories from around the world as filmmakers observe the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are 17 episodes in all with a diverse selection of content. The first episode, for example, features a filmmaker in Montfermeil, France who captures the contrasts of before and after COVID using his drone. But there are also hilarious interpretations, like a man in a nursing home who proceeds to call all of his exes before he dies to declare his love for them. It'll make viewers laugh, cry, and be thoroughly entertained.

Unorthodox – 95%

Earning several Emmy nominations, Esty is a 19-year-old Hasidic Jewish woman who yearns to learn more about life outside of her community and faith. Always the rebellious type, she questions things she shouldn't and is secretly learning how to play the piano, fueling her passion for music.

When Esty decides to escape, however, seeking out a new life in Germany, her frantic and desperate husband discovers she's pregnant and sets out to find her. Unorthodox is actually based on a true story by author Deborah Feldman and her novel Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots.

The Queen's Gambit – 100%

Interestingly, while The Queen's Gambit is the newest drama series released by Netflix, it also ranks the highest with an impressive 100% score, meaning it is universally loved. Anya Taylor-Joy and Isla Johnston deliver mesmerizing performances as a young orphan girl (later young woman) who discovers she is a chess prodigy and continues to pursue her obsession into adulthood. But temptations in life threaten to allow Beth to reach her full potential: while she is tremendously talented, she's also very flawed.

Viewers don't have to actually like or even understand chess to fully appreciate the beauty of this period series.
