Why am I writing this review at 5am??? It's because the mice- at least I hope they were mice and not rats woke me up! I felt bad for keeping my best friend awake by searching for the critters but for $240 a nite, (discounted) I shouldn't have been awoken by the squeaky conversations an chewing of a four legged creature! The staff are nice, check in was easy, location is great, furnishings great- but I shouldn't be worried about mice. Oh and did I mention the mold in the bathroom? Not a little but a lot. And it easily could be cleaned with bleach if their housekeeping was doing a thorough job. I have photos of the mold- would have taken the pics of the mice if they weren't smart enough to leave when the lights were on! So see for yourself.
Unless you like rodents do not stay here! I made the mistake of staying here because I am on a budget- I should have waited til I could afford something better. The first night I kept waking up to a scratching noise. The second nite I woke up my beat friend screaming after it crawl over my chest and woke me up, we then found it gnawing away at my back pack. And did I forget to mention the mold? Oh look at the pics. So after I politely complained they switched my room from a double bed to a single and was told I'd get a double in the afternoon- NOPE not til Thursday, when I check out! The next room they gave had mold all over the bathroom and was shortsheeted. At $240 a nite (discounted rate) I will NEVER stay here again.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 13, 2011
If only the rooms were as swank as the lobby...
The rooms are SMALL, like a closet. Not sure if that's common in NYC, but it wasn't a BIG deal, since we only stayed overnight. Anymore than three people would not work.
Not sure why there wasn't a shower curtain already in the room, but...whatever.
It was FREE and served it's purpose, so I won't complain TOO much. If the price is right, I'd stay there again. It's so convenient and within walking distance of all the Times Square action: food, subway (50th Street), shops, etc.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - ChloƩ N.Mountain View, CA182167399Jan 7, 2012
Trying to look for a hotel not too far from Penn Station that's not too expensive. Found this one by random chance on Expedia, and the pictures and the price really got me in, decided to give it a try...
It definitely has the design I love--clean, cozy and modern--both the lobby and the room!
Location? 1 min walk to M&M's world, 2 min walk to subway station, 5 min walk to time square... What can I complain?...
The room is a little small though--yeah I booked the cheap room too--but for the location at that price, it's good enough...a lot of average hotel in NY is probably like that too...
Now the things I don't like:
- The room is small but standable, but bathroom is really tiny! I can barely fit in there~
- The fan and neighbor's fan are really loud
- Sometimes the toilet flush won't stop for a while...
- And my door...I do need to hold it up when open/close it, otherwise it makes really nasty sound...
Overall, next time if I come to NYC, I will probably stay here again, but I will get a better room...hopefully bathroom will be bigger~Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 7251178Jan 31, 2014
This place is a joke. Booked a 2 bed suite for $379 a night and when we arrived they put us in a 2 bed non suite which is very(really) small. I went down stairs and asked if they put us in the wrong room(showed him a picture off the internet of the room I booked) to the guy who checked us in and he didn't say sorry, or my fault he just looked up another room and gave me the key. I guess it's true scammers are everywhere in NYC. The suite was much bigger but run down, jet tub was broken and the fixtures on the tub were hanging off. I would avoid if you can.
The only reason for 2 stars is the location of the hotelHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Allison H.Huntington Beach, CA127647Jan 21, 2014
I booked a two-night stay here at a great rate ($130/night for three people in a queen suite) over MLK weekend, no less. Our flight got in at 6 a.m., and when we got to the hotel we had just planned to store our bags. We got extremely lucky though, since they offered to check us in early for no charge. We stayed on the fifth floor in the Jefferson Suite, which felt massive by NYC standards. There was a king bed, a desk, chest of drawers, a real closet with an ironing board, plus a sitting area with two armchairs, a small mini fridge and a pullout couch. The room was quiet and clean, though I don't recommend sleeping on the sofa bed unless you have to (so many springs sticking into your back).
The bathroom was also a fairly decent size with a bathtub and a counter, and there were amenities like shampoo and conditioner, but it had a distinct wet towel smell from the shower curtain (like it had never been washed). The bathtub was also peeling, and there was mold all over the walls by the bathtub and sink. Basically don't let any of your stiff touch the walls and you're fine.
Other than that, the hotel is in a great location nearby subway stations and not too close to the Times Square chaos. I would recommend asking for a room on one of the upper or lower floors, and try to avoid the mid-level floors. There were only two working elevators when I was there, and whenever I tried to take an elevator down from the fifth floor, it was already full so I had to take the stairs.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nirali R.Chicago, IL361243Sep 16, 2010
I'm not sure this even deserves 1star! For a newly renovated hotel this place is HORRIBLE. Its dingy and smelly. We stayed here for 2 nights on a biz trip and it was far from decent When housekeeping is cleaning the leave trash bags all over the guest room lobbies-it makes the place smell like urine and BO. And the service is scarce-you have to wait and wait and wait for anyone to answer the phone at the front desk. And that's both as a guest and when making reservations! I would never refresh anyone here nor would I ever stay here again. Oh the maybe 1 good thing is that the wi-fi is free, but it's not the greatest connection.
Ugghhhhh gross and terribly disappointing.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 10, 2011
3.5 stars for:
- A swankier lobby then I expected. It reminded me of a mini-W Hotel
- Free wi-fi
- Central location and steps from Times Square
- Rooms updated but there were minor sloppy fixes like a toilet crack with a yellow seal.
- Houskeeping carts were kept and stored in the hallway all day and overnight
- Found hair in our shower upon checkin
- No A/C in the hallways
- Tiny rooms, though common for NYC
Overall, not bad for the price we paid and good location. But I've seen this hotel for higher rates and would definitely not pay a cent more than we did.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Anne Marie L.Mays Landing, NJ8883Jan 5, 2015
If I could a negative rating I would. Booked a King and got a Double bed. Rooms are small, and uncomfortable. The bathroom was so small it was hard to shower and dry off without bumping into the toilet. The heat didn't work. I never stayed in a room where a small electric heater had to be in it and wait for it. It didn't work either. The front desk staff could care less. Said they would credit my account with bonus points but the joke was on me because they took gift certificate for a free room that was handed in on check in and then they double dipped and charged my reward account for the room. So essentially they charged me for two nights when I stayed inly one.
When I did survey hotel manager made very rude comments and told me if I didn't like it to contact their corporate office.
Bottom line do not stay here!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dora I.Vancouver, Canada3205Aug 13, 2014
I stayed here from Aug 2nd to 10th and it was simply lovely. We paid via Groupon!
In the beginning we got room 419 and found the Wi-Fi did not work in there. But after 2 days, the front desk were pleasant in switching us out to 1226. Room Service kept everything clean, bathrooms were clean, AC works amazingly, TV was readily available, and the decor is super funky. The sink taps are occasionally leaky and the towels are located in an odd place (in the shower), but it's really not a big deal. Our bed was a queen size, and it was enough for us. The room is perfectly sizable for what a typical couple needs.
Printing tickets is a bit tricky since you'll need to pay ~$2 to use the computers in the work room, but again it's not a big deal. The door guys are great and definitely want to help you out.
Overall it was a super easy experience and comfortable too after exploring all of Manhattan & nearby boroughs. Amazing location too, right by the heart of Times Square and Hell's Kitchen.
Definitely recommend! Don't listen to the picky reviewers that rate it under 3 and complain about the lack of "space". You're not in NYC to stay in all day anyway. :PHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Karyn R.Munster, IN2257989May 10, 2012
Honeymoon road trip: three words that don't usually light a new bride's fire. I, however, was not your usual bride so those words suited me just fine. Approximately five days to cover 2000 miles. I'm an adventurous girl. Let's do this!
First major stop? NYC. Our accommodations? Best Western President Hotel. Now, I must be honest. I didn't book the hotels on our trip. My husband asked if I preferred location or swank. I went with location since we were trying to hit as many places as we could possibly fit into our five days. As long as it was clean (that's a non-negotiable) and had a (good) bed and working bathroom, I was good to go. My husband snagged a great rate (by NYC standards) and...well...we got what we paid for.
To be fair, there were some positive(ish) things about the BWP.
Hello, location! Fantastic. Close to subways, Time Square, a number of pubs, a plethora of food options, and several coffee options (yes, including three Starbucks).
The bed. Check. Big and comfy (and no signs of bedbugs--heck yeah, I check!) with an ipod docking station/alarm clock next to the bed.
Clean? Sure. It was clean (in a threadbare, seen-better-days kind of way).
And then, there were the not-so-positives...
The bathroom. Impossibly tiny with a single slanted floating shelf above the sink. And a phone. A corded phone. The kind I once stretched into the pantry from the kitchen since my parents were never down with the idea of installing a phone in my room. Ah, memories! I have my suspicions that the phone was there so that guests could call the local Sephora when they first realized that the slanting shelf would send their glass bottles of make-up and perfume (and later, an iPhone) on a trajectory that would end with shards of glass and a string of expletives. Oh, hey, I'm not kidding about that Sephora thing. I was able to call from the bathroom and have them pull everything I needed before my short walk over there. Perhaps this was all just a ruse to focus one's attention on anything but the ceiling. The ceiling, you see, was peeling...a lot. Acceptable during a home renovation, but not when you are already paying for the privilege of sleeping there.
The lobby/bar area was an interesting throw back to the 1990s. Purplish lighting, lots of white...it seemed familiar, but only because I have the (terrible) habit of watching old episodes of Beverly Hills, 90210 during bouts of insomnia. We're talkin' the pre-Peach Pit After Dark days here, people. This didn't bother me. I dig the kitschy aspect of it. Although, I don't think it is meant to be kitschy. And that's just a little sad.
Overall, if you are looking for a clean place to crash for the night or just yearn for that 1990s feel; you could do worse than the Best Western President Hotel. However, if atmosphere and the like are more your bag; I would have serious reservations (heh) about staying here.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0
