Steenberg Hotel & Spa

Cape Town|0.47km from Bistro Sixteen82
We spent 2 evenings here as part of a 30th anniversary trip to Cape Town. We were looking forward to staying here as we have always loved eating at their restaurant. It has always held a special place in our hearts as this was always our first stop after landing in Cape Town before we would even check in to our nearby hotel. So we thought that this time we would treat ourselves and make it part of our trip. So it's very sad for us to to say we don't think this hotel should be a 5 star hotel. The good. Their reaturants are outstanding, serving lovely top class food. But sadly this is where the 5 star ends. After more than a week of wine tasting, the wine tasting at steenberg was shocking and no amount of free tastings could make up for this. The person that did our wine tasting literally disappeared and left us midway into our tasting without any explanation to do a private wine cellar tour with other guests. We were left high and dry with no idea what was going on. He also was not very well informed about the wine or the Steenberg wine farm in general. Now for the hotel. When you hear boutique hotel , the first thing that comes to mind is friendly personal service. None of that existed at Steenberg unfortunately. The thing that was actually the deal breaker and that I can't believe nobody mentions in the reviews, is the damp smell in all their rooms. It is apparent that they have a damp issue in the main building. All the rooms have a terrible damp smell. They did move us but obviously all the rooms has this problem. We really think that this is a health hazard and should be sorted out as you are aware of if. We hated spending time in our room and it was quit difficult sleeping with the constant damp smell that left us feeling unwell. But the message was clear thats just the way it was and they could do nothing about it.Sadly we will not return when next in Cape Town.
