Tense and Sick Game
claudio_carvalho8 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A single mother (Abbi Butler) joins a sick game expecting to win an one-million-dollar prize. She stays alone in a room with a facilitator (James J. Fuertes) that explains the rules to her. In accordance with his information, there is a total of twenty players around the world. The game is composed by five initial rounds, where the players may quit, and will only proceed when three players leave the game. Then there is one last round that must be played until one player survives. The woman accepts the rules and the tense torture game begins. Along the rounds, the woman observes the sick behavior of the facilitator and questions the game. Who will win?

"The Odds" is an extremely low-budget film, with a tense and sick story of torture. Although the theatrical film with basically only one location, the movie is engaging and keeps the attention of the viewer. The performances are excellent, and the conclusion is predictable. But it is for very specific audiences. My vote is five.

Title (Brazil): Not Available.

Interesting premise that could have been better
OneAnjel27 May 2021
It's nothing like SAW. The only vaguely similar thread is that the victim must complete a series of tasks that continue to be more difficult. Other than that, they have nothing in common. It's not really a horror film, more of a psychological thriller. There are only a handful of films that have been successfully done in one setting with 2 characters; I include Bug, Open Water, & Scenic Route. But The Odds is more similar to EXAM (2009). I believe The Odds is about 2 people in a room who are both playing a game to win money and neither of whom know the real rules, although one of them thinks they know. I feel the Master was simply performing as he was instructed (some reviews say he 'took advantage' but it's called Grooming. The game was not 'rigged'; it seems more like neither the Player or the Master knew the true rules. I felt this was an interesting story but the acting lacked the tension and intrigue that it could have. The Player was just not someone we could connect with. And after agreeing to play the game, she then questions everything as if she is being held captive. She lacks either the emotion of someone being tortured nor the stoic demeanor of someone prepared to endure what may come. There was simply not enough anticipation or emotion to make the long moments rewarding. I also thought there were a lot of very rookie filmmaking mistakes, like the clean loose bandages (and suddenly dirty in one scene); and the Player's shirt was wet in one area then suddenly in a completely different area. All in all, I found the film entertaining enough to watch through to the end and thought the ending was rewarding, although very unrealistic. Almost a character-study that could have been much more engaging. I can see why the story itself won The Poe Contest.

Hmm nothing new here
edwardrevans14 July 2021
This movie is a poor mans EXAM or a Poor Copy of the Killing Room. It starts off well but then as it tries to ratchet the tension it goes off on it's own little illogical tangent. The movie never really concludes to a satisfying ending either, it's like we have run out of ideas to torture this young lady and have no idea on how to end the story. The Odds had protentional but blew it in the final act.

Somehow, This Movie Is GOOD
payasoingenioso29 January 2021
This one room film with two actors stays enticing. The thrill and gore are on Alfred Hitchcock - unseen. The plot is straightforward, and, honestly, the protagonist is a bit slow.

Yet somehow, this movie is on point. Even though it could have been better, all involved worked magic with so little.

Great lead actors. Tense psychological film
Jester2229 June 2019
This wasn't what I was expecting at all, I was pleasantly surprised. I expected a saw type torture porn film but it is more psychological, tense. Yes it has a couple of toe curling scenes but it's never gratuitous. The two leads are remarkable and the tension rises. Kept me gripped until the very satisfying end. Which is rare for me. A simple one room set, two actors (mostly) and I recommend you all give it a watch. Far better than most.

"What Would You Do For A Klondike Bar"
Kamurai2519 June 2021
Really good watch, would watch again, and can recommend.

Abbi Butler is amazing in this, a sort of paired down version of "Would You Rather".

Not only do the characters do a wonderful transformation through the movie, reminding me of a twisted double helix, but the idea of the physical lengths she goes to are fantastic.

If you're into horror-torture, then you've probably seen the "SAW" franchise, and "Would You Rather", and I don't think this will disappoint. It's not "Hostel", but there are definitely enough scenes that will either make you uncomfortable or uncomfortably happy.

All the Players are still in.
nogodnomasters8 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Abbi Butler subjects herself to torture for the chance of winning a million dollars. She is in a room sitting across from a smug James J. Fuertes conducting the game. In between rounds, the couple reveals their lives for film filler. The ending, which I suppose was a twist, was predictable. She is playing against unseen players.

This is basically a two-person drama with one person hurting themselves. Normally in these types of films, someone else causes the pain. Low Budget. The acting wasn't bad for the genre.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

You Lose
shelliiaae2 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The issues with this were glaring..and it's frustrating because it could've been decent..

1) This was SO on the nose, basically every single line uttered by the woman in the first 30 minutes is to make sure we know she is desperate and at the end of her rope. One emo line after another, to the point in saying "OKAY I GET IT!!" Think of every "I have nothing left to live for" line you've heard... she uses them all!!!

2) You're made to believe for 80% of the film that he's some guy likely from her past, or just a stalker that is doing this for his own fun... the issue with this is... again, they made it SO insanely obvious that it leaves the viewer with only 2 possible outcomes by pushing this hard... A) he is a bad guy from her past... or B) he's not, & the games real and he's just some weirdo that does the game...both outcomes are annoying because it's either too obvious... or they spent too much effort trying to mislead.

3) Holes... okay, so he doesn't actually know her...and the game isn't just based around her. Why then does every round seem to start just when she's set to begin? Why is he acting like such a FREAK?? Why did a grown woman walk into this place, of her own free will, & agree to this game... with absolutely zero guarantee that any of it is real? How is she going to get this money? Does she even get it? How did the bad guy get to do this so many times without anyone ever killing him before.

The actors were both very solid, but the writing was just a joke. She has multiple screws driven through her foot, presumably breaking bones along the way... & has almost no visible pain or issues getting around?

IF they didn't try SO hard to make us believe he was a guy from her past... this could've been way better actually.

"Would you rather" did a better job.

"Saw" For The New Generation
vengeance209 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Literally at the top of the DVD Cover it stated just that! And you know what? It wasn't even close! Saw is about victims fighting for survival, this film is just plain torture with a weak watery plot! A weak Splatter Film if you can call it that given the lacking of gore! But a weak attempt nonetheless!

The film follows a woman known only as "The Player" who has entered into a torture Game with other contestants in they all have to endure 6 rounds of torture, each of them featuring different methods with excruciating results all without dropping out so they can win £££ basically! Each of the contestants are situated in different rooms in different parts of the world & each have a Game Master in the room with them! The Player has a man only named "Game Master" helping with the torture & tending to her wounds when each round is over! But as the torture progress The Game master starts to turn nasty & it becomes clear that the game itself is rigged & The Player must try & escape alive!

I found the film to be pretty disappointing! It wasn't really bad, but it wasn't really good either! The torture methods while interesting weren't all that satisfying! Putting a hand over a candle, right foot in a wooden box with a rat, left in a box with screws on top to be screwed into the foot, a head dunk tank, finger tip cutting & Russian Roulette with chopping changing rules! While they were creative & there was some blood, they weren't even close to the standard set by the gore riddled Saw Films!

The fillers in-between the torturing scenes were annoying & obnoxious! Nothing but talk, talk, talk, flashbacks & other scenes which didn't gel well with the film! The ending which was sort of satisfying ended on a pretty flat & unanswered note! Even the part leading up to the end was just getting annoying & pretty stupid!

The actress and the eye candy was great, but the gore, torture methods & film overall sucked badly! The plot was thin, the film dragged (the overloaded dialogue & dragged out filler scenes didn't help!) & the characters weren't likable at all!

3/10

At least a half hour too long
WermhatsWormHat15 February 2021
As a regular gambler and horror fan I wanted to watch this. Its mostly just a graphic torture movie but it still somehow gets pretty boring at times and drags on way too long. Still, for two actors in one room the whole movie, they did some decent acting and I really liked some of the themes and quotes from the film about money and odds and hardship etc. Smart writing in some parts and the ending payed off for me. I'll give an extra point above average for the lead. Her bra should win an oscar for best supporting actress

danielcereto5 June 2019
What a waste of time. This is an amateurish movie with no plot, sense or script. The whole movie is in a room playing a stupid game. The ending confirm how stupid is this. Avoid it. Go for a walk instead or look for another one.

Thriller more than horror. Not bad at all
Lotusflower11129 June 2021
The lead character is a woman who comes from pain abs a dark past. The storyline is that she involves in a game of gambling. The gamble is supposed to be if the participants will quit or move on the next phase, round. Apparently, each participant or player has a broker, and agent who will stay with them for whatever reason, to stay focused, to keep on going, not give up or to make sure the rules are followed. The participants (we assume there are several but see only one) are subjected to tortures that they need to endure. The acting was good, the lead was really good. She reminded me of the girl from The Hunt. Interesting movie. At least a different subject as the ones repeated so many times. I recommend it. Not an Oscar worthy movie, but quite a nice one. Entertaining.

All filler, no killer.
stoob0t10 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's very hard to deliver a compelling film with a minimal cast; the chemistry, performances, and the dialogue have to be of a very high standard.

It probably comes as little surprise that in The Odds, the chemistry, performances, and dialogue are not of that very high standard.

While Abbi Butler turns in a very solid performance as The Player, James Fuertes as the Games Master falls pretty flat. As the film goes on, the sense of one of the two carrying every scene starts to become frustrating.

Between each round of "the game" there are blocks of dialogue between the two, which have the intention (I presume) of making us feel more connected to both characters, and of conveying the stakes of the game. Because of the mis-match in performances though, and combined with quite a generic script, these drag and start to bog the whole film down.

Realistically, in editing they could have dropped probably around 20 minutes and helped the film to stay tighter and better paced, and lost some of the parts which fell flat.

The imbalance in the key performances, combined with the drawn-out pacing and filler, starts to hamper any attempt to build anxiety and tension as the film goes on. There are points where the stakes just feel unimaginably low, and it's hard to care what happens next.

The sense of not really caring about what happens next is largely exacerbated by the fact that the ending is very heavily telegraphed from around the mid-point of the film. In the end, it starts to feel very much like you're just waiting for the inevitable.

Overall, The Odds of finding this film as thrilling or gripping as the producers intented, are very low indeed.

Trying to be deeper than it is!
tarajwilkinson11 July 2021
This started off fairly promising but boy did it get dull fast! By the time it was half way through I was skipping forward as I'd stopped caring and just wanted to get to the end!

It was trying to be very clever, psychological and deep but (with my limited medical knowledge) I couldn't help feeling the main girl recovered from assorted torture methods rather quickly!

Satisfying low budget suspense with torture porn
vasiln26 June 2019
Woman plays a game showing how far she is willing to self-harm for a million bucks. Film is almost entirely about her interaction with the referee.

This is probably as low budget as anything-- basically one setting, two speaking characters, most gore is insinuated rather than shown, might have been filmed over the course of a week or less-- but they do a good job with the budget by making those choices, and while it might have a late-night Showtime feel to it, it's at least just a B-movie, not a C-movie; production values are still high.

As I said in the title, this is basically a suspense film, about character interaction, although there is some torture porn to it. The gore is mostly off-screen, but if you don't like gore, stay away. Character interaction is with a cookie-cutter misogynist, and I'd be willing to bet there are some deeply individual misogynists who would resent the portrayal; I guess they should probably stay away as well.

Acting is strong, but character writing is on the two-dimensional side and serves narrative convenience over strong characterization. It's no Streep vehicle. Still, good enough for this film.

I suspect some of the reviews here are from shills, people involved in production, but this isn't a bad film, acceptable for what it is, although very far from high art.

Mediocre & Unconvincing
ru_thaker3 August 2020
The acting of the female was disappointing in that she was a bit dramatic & unconvincing. Thee whole role playing thing was absurd. What got me the most was given the excruciating pain of the torture, she continued with the role playing & in parts, you'd never know it had happened. The agony & aftermath of would leave you unbelievably weak, sedated almost & whimpering & screaming continually. It was like, after the torture act, she as over it very quickly. Silly. So it was unconvincing. Along with the acting.

mostly talk
lifelinespublishing17 November 2019
I was dissapointed with this film as it was really not that gory, I was hoping it would be gory and full of blood since the plot was for how much can you handle pain., but when I watched it., it was mostly all talk and less action in summary.

won't get into the details but Abbi who plays the game, did a good job in acting., sadly, I expected it to be sicker than it is.

dissapointed to say the least.

Slow and boring with a dumb final act and a silly ending..
LincolnSixEko10 March 2022
This movie is 1hr and 47min but it felt double that. Its soooo slow, and when you expect something awesome is going to happen towards the end it just falls on its face then provides a stupid ending. Waste of time.

I can only assume that the low ratings are from people who didn't understand the narrative
squodge23 June 2019
I decided to take a chance with this film because the premise is pretty good - a woman plays a game to win $1m, enduring different things every round.

I find it bizarre that the previous review said the film has no plot, sense or script - the reviewer is possibly braindead or didn't actually watch the film. The fact they rated it 1/10 is astonishing - that rating is for films like "Sharknado".

PLOT The film definitely has a plot - this is mentioned in the synopsis. There's also character development throughout the film, so I'm not sure what some people are watching, because it's certainly not this film.

SENSE A lot of people I know said that "Saw" was senseless and just "mindless violence", and I've heard the same said about "Hostel". This film is the same as those two films - it definitely has sense, and once you realise what's going on, it make 100% sense. If it doesn't make sense to a viewer, then I can only assume they're not paying attention.

SCRIPT It's not the most original story, but it certainly has a script. I felt the pacing was just about right, and there was enough intrigue to keep you guessing what's really happening. My feeling is that this possibly would've been better as a TV episode (Outer Limits, Black Mirror, those kind of shows), as 1h40m is a little long deliver the punchline.

Overall, I give the film a solid 8/10 for solid acting, a good script, and plenty of atmosphere.

Torture porn is not horror.
Patient4445 June 2019
I just finished this and I must say I'm not quite particularly impressed by it. Was not drowned to see more, but actually hoping for a quick end and I do believe I managed to anticipate the final reveal quite well.

You see, movies like The Odds or The Divine where they really show explicit torture but they excuse the graphics on the account of a "plot" don't work as good as they think. Either go for the Saw franchise (except the first) or go for a more decent plot, fill it with some revenge action such as You're next and perhaps you'll manage to pull it through.

A better example of this kind of movies is The Belko Experiment. Now don't get me wrong, it's not the best one out there, but has some similarities, like smaller budget, filmed on location and an ending that wants to give some kind of meaning to it all. In the end I think The Odds is kind of all over the place without achieving much success. Watch it at your own peril.

Cheers!

Boring, annoying
oskarneuburger29 September 2020
Boring unsypathetic characters doing annoying things. The way this movie presents itself is that the "challenges" are the main component, but they are quick and underwhelming, in between long boring annoying scenes of the main characters doing boring annoying things. Instead: If you want gore: Saw If you want a horror movie about a game, for money: would you rather Neither of those are perfext movies but are much better than this 2 hour waste of time
