Tense and Sick Game
claudio_carvalho8 May 2020
A single mother (Abbi Butler) joins a sick game expecting to win an one-million-dollar prize. She stays alone in a room with a facilitator (James J. Fuertes) that explains the rules to her. In accordance with his information, there is a total of twenty players around the world. The game is composed by five initial rounds, where the players may quit, and will only proceed when three players leave the game. Then there is one last round that must be played until one player survives. The woman accepts the rules and the tense torture game begins. Along the rounds, the woman observes the sick behavior of the facilitator and questions the game. Who will win?

"The Odds" is an extremely low-budget film, with a tense and sick story of torture. Although the theatrical film with basically only one location, the movie is engaging and keeps the attention of the viewer. The performances are excellent, and the conclusion is predictable. But it is for very specific audiences. My vote is five.

Great lead actors. Tense psychological film
Jester2229 June 2019
This wasn't what I was expecting at all, I was pleasantly surprised. I expected a saw type torture porn film but it is more psychological, tense. Yes it has a couple of toe curling scenes but it's never gratuitous. The two leads are remarkable and the tension rises. Kept me gripped until the very satisfying end. Which is rare for me. A simple one room set, two actors (mostly) and I recommend you all give it a watch. Far better than most.

I can only assume that the low ratings are from people who didn't understand the narrative
squodge23 June 2019
I decided to take a chance with this film because the premise is pretty good - a woman plays a game to win $1m, enduring different things every round.

I find it bizarre that the previous review said the film has no plot, sense or script - the reviewer is possibly braindead or didn't actually watch the film. The fact they rated it 1/10 is astonishing - that rating is for films like "Sharknado".

PLOT The film definitely has a plot - this is mentioned in the synopsis. There's also character development throughout the film, so I'm not sure what some people are watching, because it's certainly not this film.

SENSE A lot of people I know said that "Saw" was senseless and just "mindless violence", and I've heard the same said about "Hostel". This film is the same as those two films - it definitely has sense, and once you realise what's going on, it make 100% sense. If it doesn't make sense to a viewer, then I can only assume they're not paying attention.

SCRIPT It's not the most original story, but it certainly has a script. I felt the pacing was just about right, and there was enough intrigue to keep you guessing what's really happening. My feeling is that this possibly would've been better as a TV episode (Outer Limits, Black Mirror, those kind of shows), as 1h40m is a little long deliver the punchline.

Overall, I give the film a solid 8/10 for solid acting, a good script, and plenty of atmosphere.

Far too less torture
the_real_smile16 August 2020
Interesting premises, but with only a few torture scenes and most of the movie filled with boring flashbacks, makes this movie a bore.

What is this?
danielcereto5 June 2019
What a waste of time. This is an amateurish movie with no plot, sense or script. The whole movie is in a room playing a stupid game. The ending confirm how stupid is this. Avoid it. Go for a walk instead or look for another one.

If you liked Saw and other movies like that, you'll love this one. Not for the faint of heart.

Warning: Spoilers
If I had to choose to watch this movie again or put my foot in a box with a rat... Honestly, I'm probably going rat.

This had a good premise and the description reminded me of one of my favorites, Would You Rather, but the follow through was no where In sight.

I know it's a movie but the primary point of entertainment in these types of movies is precisely the idea that this COULD absolutely happen. Without that belief the movie loses all value. For example, there is no way someone is going to let someone drill screws through their foot or cut their damn fingers off for only a chance at a million dollars. There would have to be some guarantee of money at each level along with a real sense of players being eliminated. A guy just telling you they are eliminated would not be enough to push a person to make those choices. The only other way they do it is if it's by force but in this case the majority of the game is voluntary. Absolutely unbelievable.

Oh yea and no woman is going to be flirting in that moment and playing make believe. Hey how's your foot? Oh you like horses huh? Oh you can't have only one horse? Golly you are cute....stop... Are you kidding me? Who writes this garbage...

Also, why it took her 20 minutes of screen time to realize she could just point the gun at him I have no idea. That ending was painfully obvious. Painful because I had to watch the same setup of her pulling a trigger what felt like a thousand times all while knowing exactly how it would end. That was the real torture.

If you need a torture horror fix go rewatch Green Inferno, Hostel, Saw or maybe just talk to someone cause you might need help ;)

Loved It
avacado-124 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
What a great movie. The two main characters were amazing. I could see this was a low budget movie but the acting was brilliant. Her desperation and his calm cool insane manner kept me on the edge of seat. I loved how as the challenges got tougher he would calm her and convince her she could complete them. After every horrid challenge he would bandage and take care of her. He was making her fall for him except towards the end. She was a damaged woman who in the end became stronger than she could have ever imagined. Also have to say that guy is so cute even though he was evil and insane. A movie definitely worth watching.

don't expect a fun, Saw-like, watch-with-friends movie..
stardust_particles5 June 2019
Honestly, I was sure this movie was going to suck.. and it started kinda slow and 'cheap'.. but it gets better, more serious and more interesting as the time passes.. After a while, I was 'engaged', trying to figure out what's gonna happen, is there gonna be a twist.. and it was worth watching it until the end..

Again, this isn't a fun Saw-like movie to watch with your friends.. it's actually quite serious and emotionally challenging.. i suggest you watch it when in the right mood.. kind of a 'hostel part 1' mood..

Torture with no real message and the special effects are pretty cheep. I did like the lead girl and James Fuertes is always a pleasure to look at.

Satisfying low budget suspense with torture porn
vasiln26 June 2019
Woman plays a game showing how far she is willing to self-harm for a million bucks. Film is almost entirely about her interaction with the referee.

This is probably as low budget as anything-- basically one setting, two speaking characters, most gore is insinuated rather than shown, might have been filmed over the course of a week or less-- but they do a good job with the budget by making those choices, and while it might have a late-night Showtime feel to it, it's at least just a B-movie, not a C-movie; production values are still high.

As I said in the title, this is basically a suspense film, about character interaction, although there is some torture porn to it. The gore is mostly off-screen, but if you don't like gore, stay away. Character interaction is with a cookie-cutter misogynist, and I'd be willing to bet there are some deeply individual misogynists who would resent the portrayal; I guess they should probably stay away as well.

Acting is strong, but character writing is on the two-dimensional side and serves narrative convenience over strong characterization. It's no Streep vehicle. Still, good enough for this film.

I suspect some of the reviews here are from shills, people involved in production, but this isn't a bad film, acceptable for what it is, although very far from high art.

All the Players are still in.
nogodnomasters8 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Abbi Butler subjects herself to torture for the chance of winning a million dollars. She is in a room sitting across from a smug James J. Fuertes conducting the game. In between rounds, the couple reveals their lives for film filler. The ending, which I suppose was a twist, was predictable. She is playing against unseen players.

This is basically a two-person drama with one person hurting themselves. Normally in these types of films, someone else causes the pain. Low Budget. The acting wasn't bad for the genre.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Mediocre & Unconvincing
ru_thaker3 August 2020
The acting of the female was disappointing in that she was a bit dramatic & unconvincing. Thee whole role playing thing was absurd. What got me the most was given the excruciating pain of the torture, she continued with the role playing & in parts, you'd never know it had happened. The agony & aftermath of would leave you unbelievably weak, sedated almost & whimpering & screaming continually. It was like, after the torture act, she as over it very quickly. Silly. So it was unconvincing. Along with the acting.

mostly talk
lifelinespublishing17 November 2019
I was dissapointed with this film as it was really not that gory, I was hoping it would be gory and full of blood since the plot was for how much can you handle pain., but when I watched it., it was mostly all talk and less action in summary.

won't get into the details but Abbi who plays the game, did a good job in acting., sadly, I expected it to be sicker than it is.

dissapointed to say the least.

Holy Crap!
salstockbroker-811838 September 2019
Full disclosure: I know some of the people that made this movie but I only recently got to see it (for free!) and I loved it. I thought the acting was amazing and it stuck with me long after the movie was over. Some of the stuff here will be hard for those faint of heart to take, but as a huge horror fan, this was just what the doctor ordered. If you are reading this, you HAVE to watch this movie.

Boring, annoying
oskarneuburger29 September 2020
Boring unsypathetic characters doing annoying things. The way this movie presents itself is that the "challenges" are the main component, but they are quick and underwhelming, in between long boring annoying scenes of the main characters doing boring annoying things. Instead: If you want gore: Saw If you want a horror movie about a game, for money: would you rather Neither of those are perfext movies but are much better than this 2 hour waste of time

Torture porn is not horror.
Patient4445 June 2019
I just finished this and I must say I'm not quite particularly impressed by it. Was not drowned to see more, but actually hoping for a quick end and I do believe I managed to anticipate the final reveal quite well.

You see, movies like The Odds or The Divine where they really show explicit torture but they excuse the graphics on the account of a "plot" don't work as good as they think. Either go for the Saw franchise (except the first) or go for a more decent plot, fill it with some revenge action such as You're next and perhaps you'll manage to pull it through.

A better example of this kind of movies is The Belko Experiment. Now don't get me wrong, it's not the best one out there, but has some similarities, like smaller budget, filmed on location and an ending that wants to give some kind of meaning to it all. In the end I think The Odds is kind of all over the place without achieving much success. Watch it at your own peril.

Cheers!

4* whatsoever
philmuelleder6 June 2019
Acting, cuts, scenery - plain good. shout out to the actors, pretty awesome stuff but i have some bad news for the writer.

keep it up buddy; you're in the business now, but let's face the truth: horror is not quite your genre. e.g.: the knife woud've made a good acting a little later; and so on..

but at least: you made me watch the whole thing, which is pretty impressive

Surprisingly good movie
JDoc333 May 2018
We really enjoyed this movie. It's a very well-paced, entertaining thriller with all the right elements of action, suspense, and squirm-in-your-chair tension.

We were fortunate enough to be part of an advanced screening and were pleasantly surprised by this one. I was expecting it to have that low-budget, B movie feel to it but that wasn't the case at all. It's one of the best movies I've seen in awhile and definitely the biggest surprise.

This one defies the odds!
mindcrimefilms-5589617 October 2018
A low-budget psychological thriller with only two actors and one location shouldn't be able to maintain suspense and interest for 90 minutes. And yet, "The Odds" by first-time writer/director Bob Giordano, manages to deliver the goods thanks in no small part to a smart concept and fantastic performances by two up-and-coming actors. This is a case study in how to do a lot with a little and it's no wonder this film is racking up awards and buzz on the indie film circuit. "The Odds" is a safe bet for your time and attention.

Really enjoyed this!!!
ashton-9920617 April 2018
This film was amazingly good. It was a somewhat difficult task to pull off, being that there are really only two major characters. Both actors are outstanding, and the story was extremely well written and executed. There were definitely moments of tension, and moments where I had to look away. Highly recommended.
