If you're looking for a holiday-themed stage production, consider seeing a live theatrical performance of

The Nutcracker

. It's a classic Christmas story that is based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, a book written back in 1816. In 1892, the original ballet based on this source material was released. While the production struggled in relative obscurity for many decades, the score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky eventually touched a chord. After almost a century,

The Nutcracker

became a perennial favorite that enjoys immense popularity during the holiday season. Originally, this was a dark and gruesome story that was a bit too violent for younger children to enjoy. Over the years, however, more family-friendly variations were created.

'Visions of Sugar Plums Danced in Their Heads'

'This story follows the adventures of a young girl who gets a nutcracker for a gift on Christmas Eve. She loves the toy so much that she goes to get it from under the Christmas tree and falls asleep. As she begins to dream, she notices that all of her toys are alive, and she is a princess. In the stage production, a tree grows to be about 40 feet tall to make the girl look like she's the size of a mouse. The girl and her nutcracker go on adventures through the Land of Snow and the Land of Sweets. They battle mice until they reach the Mouse King. He is a tough battle, but the girl and her prince are able to defeat him on their way to see the Sugar Plum Fairy.'
