“Review of Tangled Roots (and tour), NOT a review of The Lone Buffalo”

The Lone Buffalo by Tangled Roots Brewing Company
Ranked #1 of 92 Restaurants in Ottawa
Description: Nestled in the historic small city of Ottawa, deep in the heart of beautiful Starved Rock Country, you’ll find one of Illinois’ most remarkable brewpubs, The Lone Buffalo. Ottawa is famous for its many historic murals and our restaurant derived its name from the one on our building, which shows the buffalo that once roamed the area, and which can still be found in nearby Starved Rock Park. But Ottawa is not only known for its beautiful outdoors. It is also a place where small town values meet progressive thinking. The Lone Buffalo restaurant is a great example of that. This brewpub is remarkable in many ways: remarkable because of its rich and varied menu, taking familiar local favorites and giving them a chef-inspired twist. Remarkable because of the stunning decor, the highlight of which are the twin Bavarian copper brewing kettles. Lunch brunch runs until 3pm Saturdays and Sundays.

The restaurant (Lone Buffalo) from my four trips there is very well managed, busy or not. This review is NOT of the Lone Buffalo, unless that manager runs the brewery.

On my way with a friend to the tour, I was extolling the virtues of the service - only to be let down and embarrassed.
The Tangled Roots brewery, has very good beers at a reasonable price and usually personal service unless; If you go on a busy day, they need HELP and organization!

Taking the brewery tour 10/21 was disappointing and not worth our time.
In fact, we got there 1/2-hour early to a packed house with two staffers working and three-others walking aimlessly and/or sitting drinking at the bar. I presume the guys at the bat with the "TR" shirts on were employees because, after about 20-min., one of them went into the back room, grabbed some towels to clean things up then sat back down to continue drinking?
While dirty tables and unorganized self-service was not typical of previous visits, this was a mess!
During the tour...... (Amanda did her best and was nice and humorous)
However, we were put off by the general un-cleanliness, broken bottles, dirty keg cleaning unit, buckets and half empty glasses of beer in the "bottling area" where tour-goers were supposed to be walking. This was really sad, especially since the booking process requires 7-days advance; be a Boy Scout - be prepared!

At the end of the tour, no "crowler" cans? why the advance notice?
My friend left with a lone growler (in lieu of each of us with a crowler) and after being sorry for bringing him, I left with a commemorative glass to recall this lame experience!

The tour has made me think twice about any future return trips to this facility.

Side note:
This is a brewery, New flash!! TR you are promoting that people drink beer here;
A men's room with one sit-down toilet in a room large enough for three-urinals is
not the best of planning! C'mon,
I think you are better than this, your restaurant would indicate so!

Wanted to check out a local brewery and this one was recommended. We did a beer tasting to start and everyone found a beer they liked really well. The service was excellent, we couldn't have asked for better. We even went back the next night for a beer and appetizers. Food was very good too.

Back for annual visit. Scott, Kendra and Paul were awesome staff. Still great atmosphere. Started at bar for flights and apps. Pork fries and delicious mushroom flatbread. Happy hour food specials kinda lame. $3 drafts worth it.I thought the place was pricey. I imagine people from Chicago won't. Moved to side room to comfy chairs. Bought two t-shirts. Admired the lit up drum set. My favorite beer was Kupfer. Theater across street. Could definitely do dinner and a movie. Cute shops around it. Park on street. Hear that they bought building next door and are expanding. Amazing place in small town.

My family and I were in Ottawa for a bicycle ride and I was famished after the ride so I got on Tripadvisor and looked for a restaurant. Tangled Roots/Lone Buffalo was less than a mile away and was well reviewed so my family and I took a chance and it was the best decision we made for quite some time. Even though I had gym shorts, a t-shirt and ball cap I didn't feel out of place. The atmosphere is casual with some people dressed as I was and others in what I would describe as business casual. The waitress was very cheerful and helpful. The service was prompt and she recommended several dishes. Since my family had had a late breakfast and I just finished a long bicycle ride we decided to split a couple appetizers and I had the recommended house burger with bacon, carmelized onions and white cheddar. My son had the "hoppy" lemonade which was made in house and he loved it. I thought it was a tad sour for my taste but he loved it. We ordered the rock shrimp, the sausage and cheese plate and the bavarian style pretzels. We chose wisely. The rock shrimp were great and the sauce they were served with was different but great. The sausage and cheese plate had pita wedges, pecans, a goat cheese, two other cheeses, house made bread and butter pickles, ground mustard and two types of sausages. I loved everything as did the family. The goat cheese was great. My wife absolutely loved the stone ground mustard and my boys loved the other cheeses and the sausages. I really liked the pickles. The pretzels were served with the stone ground mustard and a cheese type spread. One son just ate the pretzels plain although I really like the cheese spread. The fries which came with the burger were well made and the burger was perfectly cooked and one of the best burgers I've ever had. I must admit that I didn't expect to find such a great restaurant as this when I signed up for the bike ride. I need to find more reasons to come to Ottawa so I came have another great meal,
