48% 48 Reviews Tomatometer 84% 500+ Ratings Audience Score Aaron Sorkin once chronicled the daily work of the federal government in "The West Wing." In "The Newsroom," the Emmy-winning executive producer uses the operation of a fictional cable news network as the heart of the story, with Jeff Daniels portraying the network's lead anchor and leading an ensemble cast. Episodes are written around actual recent news events, reported by a staff that takes its collective responsibilities seriously, but corporate and commercial obstacles -- plus entangled personal relationships -- fly in the face of their public mission. Critics Consensus

Though it sports good intentions and benefits from moments of stellar dialogue and a talented cast, The Newsroom may feel too preachy, self satisfied, and cynical to appeal to a wide range of viewers.

AM J If you're a Sorkin fan, you'll enjoy all his usual trademarks - witty banter, lovable characters, topical storylines. It's a decent show & enjoyable to watch but it doesn't hold a candle to The West Wing which is superior on all counts. The Newsroom falls flat on comedy with its relentless preaching, the characters end up looking like caricatures & the banter is often garbled by actors that don't have the gift for it. Just goes to show it takes a special cast with extraordinary chemistry to create the kind of magic Sorkin is known for. This just doesn't quite make the cut. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/24 Full Review Peter S Well, i wouldn't call that speech a "meltdown", but rather a most necessary dose of reality that every college student should get on a daily basis these days. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/27/23 Full Review Alec W I don't get the rave reviews. Maybe when it first came out it was edgy, informative, full of pointed political commentary. But here in mid 2023 it looks dated and kind of silly; all this strum und drang over an oil spill or who anchors an hour of cable news. It's pretty boring, and the nonstop snappy patter is no substitute for compelling situations or believable characters. Really, Aron Sorkin should consider having his characters shut up occasionally and let the camera do the work. The show is also visually impoverished, unless you're really into newsroom scenes. Skip it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/01/23 Full Review Matthew N I've watched a lot of series over the years. A lot. Even with only three seasons, The Newsroom is in my all time top three. I was already a Sorkin fan with The West Wing but this show had me at the first episode and I couldn't stop watching. Part of the draw was seeing real stories that I lived through and being reminded of how I felt and where I was when they happened. Couple that with the characters, the storyline, the uncompromising idealism and principle, and the outstanding performances by Jeff Daniels and company - It reminded me of why I'm proud to have served this country and of the importance of integrity and free thought. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/21/23 Full Review Connor P Loved every episode!! Take it for what it is ..a good show Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/21/23 Full Review a.l.jude p It is guaranteed that you will be blown off your feet. Brilliant in every aspect and this is what a TV show could go with all ingredients are in right aspects. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

William Thomas Empire Magazine Aaron Sorkin, HBO and a show about network news seemed a perfect fit, but this first season had a rocky start. Rated: 3/5 Nov 3, 2017 Full Review John Griffiths Us Weekly Even with The West Wing creator at the wheel, HBO's Next Big Drama, Newsroom, which is set at a CNN-like network, disappoints. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 14, 2017 Full Review Andy Greenwald Grantland Ultimately, no one appears more deluded than Sorkin. His Will McAvoy is an insufferable blowhard, but the show spends most of its energy trying to convince us he's a saint. Sep 16, 2013 Full Review Ruhaan Shah Film Companion Even when the show is varnished with its fictional media gloss, its ideology is steadfast. It's never meant to be revolutionary either. Apr 29, 2020 Full Review Jeff Bercovici Esquire Magazine The Newsroom is a little like 24 would be if there were no Jack Bauer, only the nerds back at CTU.
