      AM J If you're a Sorkin fan, you'll enjoy all his usual trademarks - witty banter, lovable characters, topical storylines. It's a decent show & enjoyable to watch but it doesn't hold a candle to The West Wing which is superior on all counts. The Newsroom falls flat on comedy with its relentless preaching, the characters end up looking like caricatures & the banter is often garbled by actors that don't have the gift for it. Just goes to show it takes a special cast with extraordinary chemistry to create the kind of magic Sorkin is known for. This just doesn't quite make the cut. But here in mid 2023 it looks dated and kind of silly; all this strum und drang over an oil spill or who anchors an hour of cable news. It's pretty boring, and the nonstop snappy patter is no substitute for compelling situations or believable characters. Really, Aron Sorkin should consider having his characters shut up occasionally and let the camera do the work. The show is also visually impoverished, unless you're really into newsroom scenes. I was already a Sorkin fan with The West Wing but this show had me at the first episode and I couldn't stop watching. Part of the draw was seeing real stories that I lived through and being reminded of how I felt and where I was when they happened. Couple that with the characters, the storyline, the uncompromising idealism and principle, and the outstanding performances by Jeff Daniels and company - It reminded me of why I'm proud to have served this country and of the importance of integrity and free thought.
