"The New York Dolls may have suffered from too much, too soon, but the Big Apple group fronted by David Johansen left their mark in the wild world of rock 'n' raunch with their mid-seventies albums. With image on high, while kickin' it from the gutter, the Dolls slammed the glam with a punk edge, and a heavy lean on the sixties. It was Johansen who garnered the spotlight as the animated vocalist, but it was bangs-in-the-eyes guitarist Johnny Thunders that powered the New York Dolls. Just check out J.T.'s low slung fretboard work on the Dolls' debut album from 1973...the colorful memories of the wild Dolls in drag daze will never fade for those that were along from the bitchin' ride during the high times seventies. You may not be able to put your arms around a memory, but you sure as hell can crank the songs from those stack heel struttin' nights of the living Dolls.

"So right, yet so wrong. With the Rolling Stones just about past their sell-by date, New York Dolls could have been the heirs - hell, they had the attitude, and they had the look, as if they really had seen their mother, baby, standing in the shadow. So what stopped them? Well, their look for one thing. Androgyny may have been just about possible in a Britain in the midst of the glam craze, but Middle America just wasn't ready to embrace that kind of thing, perhaps especially since it was allied to a new, virulent slant on the kind of raucous dionysian strand of rock that couldn't give a monkey's what dreary radio programmers and men in suits thought, in an age that was settling into mellower strands. New York Dolls became fashionable after the fact by helping to pioneer the whole punk scene, that exploded once they themselves had imploded. They belong to that select group of artists who burned out of control, but managed to ignite a more controlled blaze in the hearts of a chosen few who let themselves be touched, smitten, kissed, mauled, ravaged and ultimately impregnated with an extraordinarily potent seed. For a moment when I was listening to the first LP I was tricked into thinking that they sounded surprisingly conventional. Then I wised up and remembered that it's because every group since with an ambition to appear rebellious and wasted has (for better or worse) modelled itself consciously or unconsciously on New York Dolls. And I have yet to hear the band's music in any supermarket, which I take as a sign that it remains fundamentally inimical to those who would have us all wander idly through society's insidiously positioned aisles like sheep." - resist_retreat
